My girlfriend thinks she got caught speeding today so she can either take points on her licence or do a 4 hour course. These courses are amusing because they're basically a get out of jail free card. No points on your licence for the sake of a small amount of your time.
Several family members of mine took them and said they have no effect. My grandad probably had the best reaction "I'm a changed man, after 50 years of safe driving they finally got my awful habits out of me *bursts out laughing*"
I wonder how long they keep doing the courses before they realise they do nothing. Probably a while since they likely make a lot of money out of them.

they're not always a get out of jail free, most insurers ask that you disclose being on that course and still affects your premiums, so in that affect it can be a better (and cheaper) option to take the points

If they just ask you to disclose it I don't think anyone will. Lying to insurance companies is second nature for most people.

I took one because of a BS running a red light charge. It was easier than fighting the ticket.

Yeah I doubt fighting it in court is an easy process. What happened for you to get a ticket?

Lying to insurance companies is a great way to invalidate your insurance.

somethings you can get away with lying to the insurance about eg air filter etc. however something such as a speeding course is something they can easily find on their own, then your screwed

While true when there's no way for them to find out you did the course why tell them. Just voluntarily giving them money essentially.

yes it's likely to cost them time and money however it could be cheaper for them to find that out then pay out on a big insurance

True but at the end of the day you take the chance, pay more for insurance or pay less with the risk of them finding out if you need to claim. Everyone I've known has either taken the risk or had no idea insurance companies care.

The cop claimed I ran the light because the camera went off. I know damn well the camera goes off every time and if I didn't get another ticket in the mail, I didn't run the light.

No, it's easy for them to find out. If you don't tell them, your insurance will be invalid if you ever come to make a major claim on it. They'll double-check everything at that point, and it won't be hard for them to get all the relevant details and see that you lied to them.

I've never had an insurer ask whether or not I've ever taken a speed awareness course. There are questions about convictions on driving-related offences, but nothing that deals with awareness courses specifically. I'll have to go and have a look whether that's changed since I last filled out an application.

Ah, the '50' sign. I don't think I've ever been on a fifty road, and been able to fathom why they didn't just give it a regular '/' sign.

There's a few 50 roads around my home town. One is only 1/2 a mile long and has a 30mph limit either end. Doesn't make much sense really.
