This prototype has been named "the green monster" and appears to be the child of the military chassis G63 6x6 and a "civil" G63. The result can only be described as a factory bro truck, and I would totally buy one, despite proper bros being the actual target market:

Wheels are not deep/wide enough. Try harder MB.

Fortunately, it looks like the 4x4 also has the 6x6´s portal axles. Which means it actually will be capable offroad unlike the typical bro truck. With some good offroad tires it´ll probably be epic...not that any owner actually will use it offroad

So it's a 4 wheel 6x6? What am I missing here. (other than the third axle)

So it's... what, just a G63 with portal axles?

It's going to be the 6x6 axle and suspension setup shortened to 4x4 so they can fit it on a normal length and size G-body.

Basically the suspension and axle setup of the 6x6 crammed into a normal G-wagon.

It's like the current G63 4x4 plus portal axles, LED bar, different body kit

Oh yeah, I read that it will have the complete 6x6 underpinnings with one axle less. It's gonna be a great shopping cruiser, and as you said it'll never see real offroad action.

ok so it's got the 2 of the 6x6 axles in it. Now i'm tracking.

So it's... a G63 with portal axles.
I mean, the important bit about the 6x6 was the third axle.

Yep, a G63 4x4 you can actually use off-road

Based on a silly, overdesigned truck that I believe the Austrian army ordered. And why does Austria even have an army? Armed Teutonics are never a good idea. If you have to have a pig, buy a GL or XC90, otherwise get whatever Land Rover is peddling at this point . Did I mention I hate these things?

Yep, a damn shame imo. Well hey, maybe some rich Saudi prince will take it out to the desert one day...

I want one so badly. But sadly, for that money, you can have 10 4-door Wranglers in Rubicon trim.

*Australian. There's literally no space in Austria for the 6x6s.
And I love those things. I would totally buy a G500 as it still has offroad capability. The AMGs are something else, but hey, Jalopnik always wants manufactures to build some stupid, useless cars that there's no market for, and when Mercedes does exactly that there's a load of negative comments coming their way.

My hope is seeing it doing a Motortrend test against the new Raptor or whatever Ford is going to call their capable F150. That thing in the California desert would be amazing.

You´d probably be underrating the G class with that comparison. It´s a really great offroader born out of a military vehicle. The Raptor on the other hand is born out a regular civilian truck. Two entirely different animals.
I mean, the Raptor is great, but not comparable to the G class. With regards to specs but also price. And I´m not even talking about this new G class with the portal axles. That´s why I find it crazy that G class owners never use their cars for offroading, it´s the one thing its good at...

Thing is, those wheels aren't even camouflaged.
