This past week I learned that I am, through some line in my family, related to this brave man. I find it interesting that I'm related to someone who fought through serious injuries at Gettysburg for the preservation of the Union.

It's always interesting to trace your family's past. The connection is tenuous at best though. For example my cousin found that a part of my dad's side of the family is related to the revolutionary war General Joseph Martin (the town of Martinsville VA is named after him, yes the one with the awesome NASCAR short track). But literally thousands can claim that. The family that matters most is the part that knows you. They are the ones you pick up a lot of your personality traits from.

My family has deep roots in the South. I've only gone by family more though, no real evidence. There's a chance our families fought each other in the civil war. Does that mean we can't be friends? I hope not.

Yeah, it is relatively distant. Still pretty interesting.

We can be friends, until the Second Civil War breaks out.

Despite living in the south I'm very anti slavery. Although I think that laborious work for criminals could in many times be better than incarceration. I mean like janitorial work or clean up crews for construction companies, not chain gangs breaking rocks.
Or really even better would be vocational training since so much crime is linked to poverty and the inability to get a job/a job with decent wages.

That's what I'm saying, it is interesting but it is just that really. What you get out of your past is the story of how your family got to where it is, that alone is interesting.
