Alright oppo-

I am considering getting an ex-cop car for my first car. I have a lot of reasons why ex-cop cars are a good buy, but now I want to know the cons.

I am referring to ex-cop cars in general, not exclusively CVPIs or Chargers or 9C1s.

The only reason I can think of is you have to fill the holes in the roof for the light bars.

Everyone thinks you're a cop, and they'll probably call 911 on you because they think you are impersonating one.

Wear on engine (?)

potential damage to frame if cars were crashed at one point.

Because you want a Mustang, and to turn it into a Police Interceptor. :p

Honestly, I don't see many bad reasons. Any negatives are made up by the fact that you're getting a bulletproof car for basically no money at all. Just remember that bulletproof doesn't always mean reliable.

You want a manual?

Really though, a CVPI is an AWESOME first car. I don't know much about the caprice cop cars though.

I'll give you a few reasons.

1. Most cop cars have 2 modes of operation. Idle and floored. Idle meaning cops sit in parking lots with the engine idling for extended periods of time. Floored means they take off to a call and put the gas pedal to the floor because they need to get there fast.

2. Do you want to own a vomit comet? Drunks and druggies piss, puke and shit in the backs of police cars. How do you feel about having a cesspool in the back? How would you feel about putting kids back there?

3. They have bare bone interiors with no options and exteriors are often pretty rough. When cops decommission police cars they don't care about damaging paint. If they need to remove police graphics they could even use a grinder. You will likely end up having to repaint the whole car. Then there are all those holes in the roof from antennas and light bars.

Crapices are SUPPOSED to be great, but they're hard to find now, as they were only made for a few years in the 90's

I know you saw my article and commented on it, so I won't repeat that here. More to your question...

1. They're big. When I changed jobs and my commute switched from highways to narrow twisty back roads, it wasn't particularly fun to drive there.

2. Poor gas mileage. My P71 got 20mpg whether I drove like grandpa or drove like a maniac. So I usually drove more toward that second one.

3. No manual transmission, though I've seen some modified to have one.

4. The automatic transmissions, though beefed up, can still fail on you due to lots of hard acceleration. The one in mine was rebuilt around 90k miles - fortunately, soon before leaving police service.

Some have been beat up, but if you're careful you can find a decent example. BigNSlow makes a good point on what's happened in the back seats. Again, if you get a detective's car rather than a regular patrol car, that's less likely to have happened. Also, the stock seats are vinyl, and are usually replaced immediately with the fancy plastic seats with cutouts that let you sit in them with those shiny bracelets and your arms behind your back. When they decommision the car, they take those out and put the stock seats back in, never used.

There are rubber plugs you can buy to fill in the holes left by NMO antenna mounts for just a couple of bucks . I've done it on my past cars when I removed my ham radio antennas before I sold them.

Everyone on the highway is going to be pissed at you for slowing traffic and don't hog the left lane, because you're asking for trouble from a state trooper from where I'm from. Also get a 9C1, the LT1 is bit more modifiable than the modular ford. I haven't seen a caprice PPI, so consider one if you want to stand out from the usually taxi fleets old decomissioned crown Vic's.

But I have a good friend who is a cop and he said he would never buy an ex cop car. Thats all the info I know, but thats good enough for me.

Watch out for odometer fraud. Been looking for one for my winter beater and a lot of the ones in the wild have unusual low mileage ( ex taxi?) Most departments in michigan get rid of em at 125000 miles and are usually well maintained and you can check the idle hours if you hold the trip button. Really wanted a charger but they seem to command a premium price (6000 to 9000!) Where a decent cv goes for 2000 to 3000. Check how your state gets rid of surplus items and keep an eye out. Every one is telling me I'm dumb for wanting one but every hot wheels collection needs a cop car so what if it's life size. Good luck

^This. Not to mention it's just plain creepy. Maybe it's just me? But our community had a guy impersonating as a police officer and even had his car setup with blue lights. Late at night he pulled over a couple of women and raped them. That's the first thing I think about when I see guys driving around white or black crown vics.

A lot of them are beat to hell throughout their lives. A lot of police cruisers spend tons of time just idling. And when they're not idling, they're being driven in low speeds in traffic. Also, there is probability that it was crashed at some point in its life.

Not to mention, since everybody will think you're a cop on the road, they will drive the speed limit or slower. Which could probably be annoying at times.

Ever consider a standard CV? That seems like a better option to me.

There is no reason not to buy one. I had one as my second car and it was great. Are they abused? HELL YES! but they are also the most meticulously maintained cars on the planet. Where I'm from (New-Brunswick if that matters) they have to go thru a rigorous safety inspection every 6 months and any thing that needs replacing is replaced no questions asked.

When I had bought mine (1999 Ford P71) it had 269,000km's on the clock but the odometer wasn't working so it could of had way more.I got the safety check done and my mechanic was dumbfounded on how good of a condition it was in for having that type of mileage he even offered to buy it from me and he had a Jeep Grand Cherokee he was asking if I would trade for.

I bought in 2005 for $3000 and 3 days after I got it the alternator crapped out it cost me $110 bucks to get it rebuilt. after that I drove it HARD (HARD!!!) for 2 years then I sold it to my brother for $1800 bucks and he drove it for another 2 years(although not as hard as i did) and together we but a total of $0 dollars in it other than oil, gas, and back tires every month (I liked doing burnouts so I would buy cheap tires on kijiji and installed them myself I worked at Canadian Tire at the time). That car had well over 400,000km's by the time we were done with it.

I can tell you straight up you will not find a better first car for the money. It was BY FAR the most reliable car I ever owned(including the 5 brand new cars I've owned over the years).

I can only speak on the panther I have no experience with the caprice at all(around my parts they used exclusively fords)

there's all of reasons to not buy one. But, why not?

yes they will have been beaten for most of its life and have holes in its roof/ boot (trunk for you muricans)

its your choice at the end of the day, yes its had a hard life yes its probably a little funky smelling but if its what you want and it makes you smile then who the hell cares.

I think I would buy one if I had the money.

Cool. That sounds like the best option, in my opinion. Since I'm a Chevy guy, I like the Caprice more, but they're hard to come across in decent condition. A civie CV would be easy enough to find, and would probably be more reliable.

My DD only remotely looks like it could be a cop car , and I still make some other drivers freak out and slow down. I don't know if I could handle driving a P71 at 5 km/h under the limit anytime traffic was ahead of me.

They usually just go slower, but I usually only notice it when I'm on two-lane city streets where I can't pass.
