Your transmission looks like a mess. My T5 is leaking, but not that bad.

If its the Output seal, that should be covered under the warranty. That part was replaced in september

Like arch duke, or they might not have closed everything up right. Stupid question but, did you check the fluid? They could have overfilled it and it started leaking out of the seals.

I cant check the fluid, they put thread sealant on the bolts

Not talking about the trans output seal, I'm saying the rear main seal.

Maybe, what could cause that to blow?

Is there a dipstick in the engine bay for the transmission? Some newer cars don't have this but I would think an older ranger would.

You should still be able to check the trans fluid. There's a big plug on the side that you can unscrew. Normally the fluid should be filled until it's just coming out of that hole.

Could the transmission shop have put the flywheel in wrong and caused the main seal to blow over time?

Probably just leaking from age.

Don't these transmissions take ATF? That would be red, and this fluid doesn't look like that.

At some point it was transferred over to gear oil

Well, what is the original spec for the trans? If it was ATF and they filled it with gear oil that is bad. Check your owner's manual.

Here. Page 233 specifies ATF.
Mention this on the Ford forum for sure.

With the fill hole deal I doubt it is overfilled. It is basically impossible to over fill a transmission with a fill hole because once it is full it just dumps back out of the hole. Good luck man.

Neither gear oil nor motor oil are what you need in this transmission.
It *MIGHT* be something like synchromesh which is not red but that seems unlikely.
Does it smell bad under there? Is the transmission noisy and/or tough to shift when cold?

I think he means that over time, the seal will fail due to age.

Engine Oil is usually the culprit. The most often cause is the Crankcase Ventalation System is not working, as if it's not your car will leak from every seal possible. Check it by carefully removing the fill cap while the engine is running, and if the pressure is really high, you need to replace the PCV Vlave and small filter in the Air Cleanrer or whatever your Ford has. Another reason for the Crankcase Ventalation System to fail is one of the pipes or hoses that is connected to the chrankcase dead.
For the Trans, does your Ranger use ATF? Ford has used ATF on some manual trans. If so, determining if you have a tran leak is easier.
And for both, looking with a Black Light at night may allow you to find the source of the leak.
