"sm70- why not Duesenberg?" (sm70-whynotduesenberg)

My dad is an insurance agent, and this morning one of his clients, a local bakery which I really like (frowny face) opened their new drive-through, by accident. Fortunately, no one was hurt, and my dad was surprised and pleased to discover that the Mercedes owner's insurance would cover the damage without much issue. Also, the Benz, as you can see, hit a small portion of the bakery that was being rented out, so their operations will continue as normal. And yes, it would appear the elderly owners tried to back out of their space while in drive, and then panicked and hit the gas harder.
In-depth indeed.

Breaking news: Old person confuses pedals and gears and drives through store front, no one is surprised.
This seriously happens way too often. I think after a certain age you should have to retake your driving test or something.

That should absolutely be a law. Actually, make that every year or so, regardless of age.

I've always said every 5 years. Seems like a not too ridiculous interval.

Exactly! About 2 months ago, an older woman in my old neighborhood did the same thing and jumped the curb next to a school, she continued to accelerate and hit 3 children all under the age of 12 and one of them unfortunately passed away. I know it's an accident but I still think she should've been charged because that's just really fucking stupid and to lose your 11 year old daughter due to that kind of stupidity is horrible.

YEP
2 stories about this:
1 my parents owned a gas station/mechanic shop in NJ while I was growing up out there. An old lady put a civic through a cinder block wall. said she was trying to reverse and basically the above story happened. thankfully it was un-occupied waiting to be repaired (such is the life of the old civic). Cop didn't even give her a ticket "I cut her a break, she's old" THIS IS THE PROBLEM BUDDY
story 2:
I was at the Michigan Secretary of State to update a car title. When an old lady, who could barely move on her own. like 3 inch steps with a walker. Gets to the counter - BOMBS the eye test. Person behind the counter: you need a doctors prescription for me to give you a new license. Old Lady and her son (who was in his 60s I believe) start freaking out on the lady "I need my license!" Sorry lady, need a Rx.
What the hell is wrong with people, she can barely move and can't see shit - NO YOU DON'T NEED A LICENSE.
Thank god the girl behind the counter stuck to her guns.

If they don't crash into the polling station first.
*That happened here in 2012, I believe*

Seriously... people should be forced to re-take a driving test every 5 years for their entire lives, both active and written. That would help some old people decide to pass in their license and would help keep people up to date with driving rules and changes!

Oh the second story sounds like the lady I saw the day I got my license. On a walker, husband partly holding her up getting out of an old Cadillac and came up to the line for licenses. Oh god.

The problem is that taking away old people's cars really does take away a great deal of their independence. There's no good solution. Maybe UberX, or self-driving cars or something.

Yes, it does take away a lot of their independence, but if they're not safe, then too bad. I've dealt with this a couple times with my grandparents, and it is heart breaking and dificult. I swear, I won't be like that. When my kid's sit down with me, and tell me I'm not safe, and need to stop driving, I'm handing the keys over. It's not worth it.
I do think this will be the greatest application for autonomous cars. My plan is to make sure whoever has to cart my old ass around, has a really cool car to do it in.

In Illinois, once you're over 85 (I think that's the age), you do have to retest every year.

Of course if it's not safe that needs to over-ride everything else, but in reality it is, as you know, such a hard thing to do. The tendency is to leave it a bit too long, and although it's not right, it's very easy to understand.
It wouldn't be such a problem if there were alternatives.
