Maybe it’s just me but the built in “Start at:” function for YouTube videos doesn’t seem to play well with Kinja.

The good news is that there’s a simple solution.

If you want to put a YouTube video in your post, but want it to start a certain point just follow these instructions:

While on YT, pause the video at the point you want it to start at.

Next, determine how many seconds in you are. For example, if you want to start at 2:44, it would be 164 (60 x 2 + 44).

Next you’ll have to add the time reference to the end of your YT URL. The reference should be formatted in this way: &t=number of seconds . Using our previous example it would be &t=164

All you need to do now is copy your URL with the time reference added and paste it into the Kinja editor and you’re good to go.

so instead of "?t=1m5s" you would write "#t=65"?

Yep, I've never had luck with using minutes and seconds, but converting to total seconds has always worked. As for "?" vs "#", I can't say. I just know # has always worked.

I wonder if its the "?" vs "#" modifier, or the second conversion. time to experiment.

Er, doesn't youtube do that automatically when you pause the video and then check the 'start at:' box?

The link it gives you when you do that doesn't seem work when pasted into Kinja.

But typing the same thing manually does? Or have I missed something?

Not exactly the same thing. Using YouTube's function gives you shortened link with a time reference in Minutes and Seconds. Something about that upsets Kinja so I did a bunch of toying around and discovered the way that I outlined above. Basically just taking the full address bar URL from the video and adding the time reference in Seconds.

Don't ask me why this way works and the other doesn't, I haven't a clue.

Oh, right. When I do it Youtube gives me a link in seconds. Which would explain why I haven't seen the problem...
