Out of all the departments in our company, we are one of eight to get May-July blacked out for vacations.
I had nothing booked but that is prime trip taking territory right there. The sad/frustration I have right now is overwhelming.
Angry flames below.

Non native speaker of English here, what's a vacation blackout?

Means that he is not allowed to take vacation during that period.

Well I probably have "defacto" blackout past August 1...so I feel ya.

Ahh... THAT sucks. No wonder I couldn't understand what it was, something like that would never happen here.

Time to start looking for a new job?
I used to work for a company that treated their employees like numbers (small "family owned company too), I quit and went to work somewhere else like pretty much every employee with half a brain did. Now that company is fulled with people who are too useless to be able to get a job elsewhere and the company has been loosing money for the last 3 years. We all have bets on when it's going to fold, I have December next year.

It depends. In my job there aren't explicit blackouts, but we have busy and slow periods so I mean you kind of know when is good, and when is not so good right.

pfftt. I've never had vacation in my life. I'm a contractor so no work = no pay, NO MATTER WHAT. =(

Absolutely, it's just that where I live they can't ban vacations without a VERY good reason, and they usually have to pay you extra if they do.

Could be a blessing in disguise. Now instead of taking a normal vanilla vacation with all the other travelers you have the option to go to interesting places at a time less traveled.

It's a really good company and job, actually...this is because of systems change but it's just frustrating as hell. My buddy wanted to do a Nova Scotia road trip around that time.

I did Yosemite a couple weeks ago...that's was low travel haha.
I don't really take my days (have too many left this year) out of habit so I was going to try and do more next year and specifically had some plans forming there. Oh well, I guess.

Full time work is new to me (just last year) so I was hourly before. That meant the same thing in my life.

If you are into national parks I recommend Glacier people are normally too lazy to drive that far north to see it.

I'd take this forewarning over a 'hidden' blackout where every time you put in your vacation request it gets denied mysteriously.
Silver lining.

I bet your boss is a total a-hole too!
Everybody I know in that business says that...

Look at it this way, trips on the off season are usually cheaper, which means you could conceivably take a much nicer vacation than you would otherwise. Seriously though, that really sucks, I'm so glad that's not a thing where I work.

also combine Glacier with a trip into the Canadian Rockies

It's melting, too!
My buddy has a Nova Scotia road trip in the making. He did one last year and I couldn't join cuz of work so the hope was for me to be able to this year.

Always heard they were superior to the continental US. Whistler. Canada made me a believer. (Except for the Grand Tetons)

We had that this year. New system roll out.
I was lucky - didnt need to take vacation at that time.

That's what ours is...new system integration that our teams need to be all hands on deck for.

Im not a fan of those. Still trying to fix the new system to meet our expectations.
Im not fixing it personally though, Im just a user.

I'm anticipating a rocky transition for our group. Our functions are different than others but the consultants running this transition are trying to fit our square peg into the round generic template.

I still dont know why people hire consultants that are completely external to the process whose framework they're building ._.
Our consultants were trying to push for a launch of their system - which was put together with the physical equivalent of string and spit - so they could bill us for after-work.
But our transition was not as bad as one of our other facilities. I still cant do some of my job functions.
But the other place couldnt ship /generate certs for anything. At all. Out of the orders ready to ship worth millions.
