Depends on how broke you are. Where are you staying? Somewhere with a kitchen?
If so go to Gene's in the German part of town and get this money, and just eat things based on sausage all trip. I would and have. Of course I am a New Haven Apizza snob so deep dish doesn't do anything for me. German food out there is serious

Giordano's of course. Oh, and for a diner, look up White Palace. You're welcome.
Also, Art Institute is amazing if you're into that sort of thing. And if you are REALLY broke but do like architecture, go see the Rookery Building on S. LaSalle/W. Adams St. There are actually a lot of cool buildings with amazing lobbies there.

Eatly is pretty awesome, it's like an indoor Italian market with groceries, restaurants, and little cafes.
Lincoln Park Zoo is fun and free. They also have ice skating a zoo lights there right now.
There's an arboretum near the zoo that's cool too, and a nice way to escape the cold.
There's always Navy Pier as well.
Depending on how much money you can spend, improv at Second City is supposed to be awesome. A lot of the SNL comedians over the years have been recruited from there.
That's about all I know though, because I spend most of my time in the northern suburbs where I live. I really want to start getting down to the city more.

Gene's has sandwiches already made if you are close. They are pretty cheap too. If you were there longer or it was warmer I would have set you up with a friend of mine if you wanted to buzz around town on a small motorcycle. That is what I always do out there. He always wants me to take his supercharged harley but I aint riding that around a city I dont know. I take his 68 Honda 350 all the time . Oh and can you go pick up this squareback that is hiding in a warehouse for me?

Yeah, even just walking around downtown there should be lots of Christmasy stuff too. Plus, this weekend is supposed to be relatively warm, which will be nice for you.
If you're of drinking age I'd also recommend checking out the Signature Lounge at the top of the Hancock. Actually even if you guys aren't 21 they also have non-alcoholic drinks and some appetizer dishes/desserts. It's on the 97th floor and the view is amazing, especially if you catch it right around dusk when the sun is still out but the city is lit up and you can stay there until it gets dark out to see the city at night. It's a pretty spectacular view.

go to the christkindle market, it is very cute and christmass-y, your GF will love it. Also it is free, unless you want to buy anything, then it's a rip off, also on the weekend it get's pretty crowded, go to millennium park, see the bean, consider ice-skating, but also that's usually ridiculously crowded especially in the after-noon and not free

That sucks, but you can get a soda or some other sort of drink and their deserts are great. Yeah, it's always free to go up to the lounge. Just get there about an hour before you want to be up there, because there will likely be a long line. Definitely worth going in for a drink and splitting a piece of cheesecake or cobbler. Particularly if you can get a seat near the window, it's a really pretty view. I've taken a couple of dates there, and they have all really liked it. I'd expect to spend around $20 on a dessert and drinks, since you aren't drinking alcohol.

Yeah, a little bit. You may want to hop in a cab or find a Metra line to take.
The Art Institute is awesome. There's a section of American art from the 18th and 19th century, I guess it's specifically called Hudson River school art (asked my art buddy that I went with) that's really really cool. It's all very realistic looking paintings of landscapes and scenes from American history. Being a history/political buff, and not much of an artsy type, it was my favorite section.
There's also a bunch of that ridiculous nonsensical modern/contemporary art crap too, which is a lot of fun to make fun of. haha

Thankfully my friends that I went with were a best friend from high school (who is an artist) and his gf (a former co-worker and very good friend of mine as well), and the girl and I just made fun of the art a ton.

Check out a City Pass. You get tickets to the Shedd Aquarium, the Field Museum, the Willis Tower deck, the Art Museum, and maybe one other place. It's well worth the money. As for restaurants, I always like Gino's East, but there's plenty of others that are equally as good if not better. I always like to check out places that have been on the Food Network or the Travel Channel as they typically pick out some great spots. Enjoy!

As someone who has lived in and around the city my whole life, here are places I recommend people check out:
1) Lou Malnati's or Pequod's for deep dish. Uno's invented it, Lou Malnati's kept the quality when Uno's sold out, and Pequod's took it to another level.
2) Get yourself an Italian beef sandwich. If you're going to the suburbs, go to Portillo's. If not, Mr. Beef or Al's are also good. Al's is my preference because their fries are ridiculous.
3) Burgers at the Billy Goat Tavern and Kuma's. When the Foo Fighters were here recording for Sonic Highways, Dave Grohl couldn't stop raving about Kuma's.
4) The Signature Room for drinks/sodas.
5) Intelligentsia for coffee. Their coffee is among the best I have ever had. Their attention to detail even with a simple cup is amazing.
6) This is the perfect time of year to walk up and down Michigan Avenue and State Street. Macy's (old Marshall Field's) and other stores have really detailed window decorations for Christmas. It's free and a nice walk either way)
7) Christkindl Market. The market itself has a wide variety of fun stuff to buy, and it is worth wandering around.
8) Go to the BAR side of the Berghoff. It is known for having the first liquor license after prohibition was lifted. If you are of age, get a half and half (light & dark lager). You will not be disappointed.
AVOID AVOID AVOID Girodano's and Navy Pier at all cost. You will thank me later.
