My brother owned one for a while and really liked it, I never got to see it or drive it. When I met my girlfriend 5.5 years ago she had one and I drove it: it handled like a sofa but the engine was insane. So you have a car with absolutely no feel and an engine that was over the top, perfect car to take to the dragstrip.

Yes. Any derivatives of the Northstar are expensive to maintain. They burned oil directly off the assembly line. My friend's Seville burns about a quart a month. Not to mention, they used about 8 quarts of oil for every oil change. I'd put it to be just a little less expensive to maintain than my C4.

Sounds like fun! Just kidding, sounds expensive. There has to be a fix for just the oil problem on it's own though.

Actually, it's sad. I think the Olds products of this age were actually pretty good. But the sad thing is they should have been far better if they had not been weighed down by the rest of GM

I have no idea how there isn't any. Probably all had their shortstar starved of oil.
I like the second gen because it buttoned up the exterior design a little bit. And I think the interior is better too.

I would agree, a lot of the late Oldsmobiles are actually quite good. I do not necessarily think it is all of GM; moreso Cadillac alone. Oldsmobile could have made the Aurora even better, but Execs didn't want an Olds to compete with the Cadillacs.

Yeah, most likely. A lot of them were thoroughly trashed. Though, isn't the Shortstar the LX5 V6? I don't think the Shortstar was available in the Aurora until 2001.
I'll give you that. I don't know, I just wanted always thought the 1st Gen looked a lot more unique, where, in my opinion, I think the 2nd Gen was a bit more bland. I agree on the interior, though.

The Achieva or the Aurora?
Aurora was actually quite comfortable and luxurious. Not to mention, the 4.0 V8 was a pretty damn good powerplant.
The Achieva was actually pretty quick in SCX form, which is shown above. Orherwise, yeah, not too great of a car.

Oh, lots and lots went wrong. We ended up trading it in while on vacation in Florida, because something broke again (can't remember what anymore ... the air suspension compressor maybe?), and my mom was sick of having to pay for repairs, on a car she was still making payments on. So, a full two days of our vacation, was spent car shopping. That's when I learned what a brutal negotiator my mom was.

I thought it was dubbed Shortstar because it was a shortened version of the L47 4.0. The L47 was the only engine option for the 1st Gen, if I recall.

Not sure the chassis could handle a burn out, it was way too much engine for the car. Maybe if it was early on in it's life, probably could do a fine job and shred tires. Believe you me, I've hooned a lot of vehicles, this one was tired. I do get a pass, it was an automatic tranny.

I remember a time when they were pretty common on the roads in the 90s/00s as an elemntary school kid, but I haven't seen one in ages. Along with the bubble caprice I thought they were lame grandpa-mobiles. Now they seem kinda neat.
I actually remember sitting at a dairy queen when a beat up caprice wagon pulled in (before I knew cars beyond my hot wheels collection). I just thought, "oh I see these piles of crap everywhere, I wonder what they're called." And that was my introduction to the caprice.

You and I share the same passion. We had one growing up and it was the first large vehicle I've driven. My want was intensified while working at Sears and a female customer came in with an all black with tan leather, DUALLY one with a bull bar in the front. Many restless nights ensued.

Its not much to be jealous if right now, its a roller with the engine out, but its not a Cobra Jet exactly. Its a GT Convertible, in Calypso Coral Red, that was special ordered with the 429 CJ and a four speed. Even has hide away headlights.
According to the Marti Report, its one of 12 or so GT convertibles with that engine.
It looks like this one, just not quite that colour. And with a white top.
