Hey, have you guys heard about the BlackBird or how fast it goes? probably not. Anyway, here is this.
First good explanation for the nacelle and spike operation I've seen.
here is the document referenced

Ya know, I'm really interested in whether or not some SR-71 pilots ever requested some sort of a ground speed check, say, to the tune of 'bigger-number' knots.

Man, a story like that would be sweet!

Quit dreaming, nothing like that has ever been heard of.

It's almost as though some moderate amounts of engineering went into this plane.

talk about falling onto success. Man, those guys must have been stunned how this accidentally turned out so good.

I preferred reading about outrunning a SAM over Libya.

Officially, the Blackbird has a top speed of Mach 3.2...unofficially it is much, much faster (Shul indicates he went past Mach 3.5, and the jet was still accelerating with ease)

probably designed by a bunch of stoners in a garage in portland

its also true that the engine would EASILY overspeed the airframe.

Oh, absolutely. That's why Shul's eyes were glued to the temperature gauges.

My mom's father worked on this plane and a couple others in the 60s before going into the defense contracting industry. I'm not sure what part he was involved in (he was always reticent about that stuff til the day he died-I didn't even know he had a company until after he died!), but he did tell me that the design was loosely based off the run-of-the-mill paper airplane or something of that nature, with more than a little inspiration from the infamous XB70 and maybe the Avro Arrow.

That, and the damn thing would actually stretch at high-speeds thanks to the extreme heat.

Yeah I think gas or something would leak out of the plane at low speeds because they would need space to expand at higher speeds....

The most elaborate government cover-up ever. A whole "pilot training program" and "advanced high-speed aircraft" invented to conceal the existence of advanced alien technology reverse engineering labs. These facilities were disguised as various design studios. One of the government agents, in a rare moment of lucid humor, selected the skunk as the logo of Lockheed's "design center". The reason he did so - the whole thing stunk to hell and back.
