I've been on Oppo for a while now and have noticed a trend that is more prevalent on the FP but has moved over to Oppo now as well. There is an attitude of exclusion and superiority around here. I can't count the number of times I've seen this. Whether it be directed at someone because they dare drive and like something like an SUV or crossover or they prefer a sedan over a wagon. To people being mocked for enjoying their humble car whether it be an old Buick LeSabre that they are trying to enjoy or a truck that they happen to like. As car enthusiasts it is easy to get caught up in what car is better than another or to become absorbed with the crowd but the truth is this: a Miata won't work for everyone and every person's needs and wants are different. Some people would rather have an automatic over a manual and that should be ok. Some people need a truck because of things that they do or just prefer them without a need and that should be okay too. There are many types of enthusiasts and so there many types of car people. At the end of the day no one's being paid to read this site so it shouldn't be a battleground it should be a place to share our interest in the automobile not to demean others for thinking differently. I'm not a mod and I haven't read the manifesto but I have read the rules and it was my understanding that rule #1 was to not be a dick but if I'm wrong I'll show myself the door. But to me this site should be about inclusion and not exclusion.

But we can change. I'm not saying we can't contest other oppinions but we don't have to be so bad to each other. We've shown that we are capable of helping and supporting others and it's not the fault of one person and It can't be fixed by one person either, its a group effort to change an attitude and for the most part we are a good group but a little change couldn't hurt.

So to wrap this up: Don't be a dick and have a nice day.

I try to limit my exclusive attitude to "things that are dangerous" - i.e. I don't want Murdersofa Jake to be murdered with his suspension mods, but autoxing a Buick has my full and open encouragement.

I'm on the same page as you. Enjoy your car in a way that isn't harmful. For example, I firmly believe everyone who openly admits to doing over 100 miles per hour and boasts about it to be a dumbass.

I brought this up the other day. Glad to see someone else thinks it is a problem.

There is confirmed at least one dude on oppo that owns a Ferrari currently, and another who doesn't own one now but has in the past.

I guess I don't see it as much as some people are saying. I think its probably a small minority. If you see someone breaking rule #1 for oppo (don't be a dick) or rule #2 (seriously, don't be a dick) flag the comment so we can take a look at it. Most of the time its innocuous, or at the least just subject to the communication errors that we as all humans have regarding assuming common values. However, if there is continued or pervasive dickishness, we as the mods would love to see who's doing it and how often.

Okay, I do realize there was once in the past couple of months that I was exclusive outside that. I was pretty exclusive on the topic of Tohru needing a Reatta instead of a $300 GP. Then again, he passed up a Reatta. HERETIC.

It's still better than 90% of the internet. Most places (other than fiat forums obviously) would mock my choice of car but there's been nothing of the sort here.

I havent seen a lot of dickishness, but I have noticed a lot more attempts to one-up over each other and much less camaraderie. Things like Oppo meetups and stuff don't seem to happen as much

Speaking for myself, and specifically not speaking for any of the other moderators, I have seen some of what you are talking about. And I have, in many cases, elected not to speak up because I would rather the community try to self-correct some of these issues, than have the moderators "censor" viewpoints.

The handbook spells out a lot of behaviors which are expected, but it also puts the onus on following those behaviors on the community. And I'd like to point out that by simply being here and commenting in any capacity, you're accepting the house rules.

You point out, quite correctly, the greatest thing about oppo, is that we don't have a particular "chosen car / model / make / style / nationality"... We're bigger than that, we encompass more, and as I have said countless times, it is our diversity which is our greatest strength as a community. But with that diversity comes the need to communicate and understand and respect each other. The first two points there, communication and understanding, those are on everyone's shoulders. The last one, respect, that's for everyone to follow, but is the line where most often the moderators do step in. And in my eyes, that's a good place for our line to be.

Thanks for bringing this up, if you feel it's a concern (and you aren't alone), then let's try to change the tone. Be the change you want in the world.

I haven't really noticed the behaviour you're talking about, but then I haven't really been looking for it either.

I do agree with your basic conceit though, not being a dick makes the place better for everyone. And if you're one of those people for whom being a dick makes it better for you, this isn't the place for you.

I like your car. I don't know if I'd own one (mostly bc I don't know anything about them) but I'd gladly and proudly drive it if given the keys.

This is the kinda attitude I like here. There are many cars oppos have I would never personally choose but they all have their seperate virtues.

I see a bit of "tongue in cheek" chiding here. I do not consider it serious. If anyone would be considered inferior and chided, it would be people like me that drive a pickup, own a British car and a Subaru and ride a Harley, and don't worship any Miata, BMW, Honda, Saab, etc. I have no problems with people that do not agree with me. That is what makes this such a great place. I feel perfectly at home here.
