So, turns out I have no power steering leaks. But may have a leaking (or seeping) Transmission oil cooler hose. This prompted me to review my receipts from the repairs and parts I have purchased over the last 7 years of Land Rover ownership. The results are staggering and they don't include my insurance costs or fuel expenses.
I bought my 03 Disco II for 11k with 42k miles on it.
I have spent almost twice the purchase price on repairs and parts for repairs: $19,482.44
Holy crap!!
Someone please show the things I could have done with the over 30k that I could have used elsewhere, because I haz a major sad at the expense of ownership.

I forget the exact number now, but it was just over 14k in the 7 years that I owned my E46 M3. That's total $ spent not including fuel. The only "repair" was an ignition coil $125 installed.

1 transmission replacement
1 engine rebuild
1 engine replacement
2 front driveshafts
1 master cylinder
1 transfer case
1 oil pump
and plenty more expensive parts I don;t feel like reading and listing.

There was a thread a while back for this. I don't remember quite what I totaled up, but the Benz was pretty dang low for a nearly 400k mile vehicle.

I totaled my 5 years of E46 maintenance and it was in the $4k range if I recall correctly? And I included oil changes, wipers, light bulbs, alignment, TIRES, everything but fuel.

Probably a couple grand at most. Just oil changes and recommended changes at mile hallmarks.

Here is the kicker, due to several back to back deployments my rig only has 92k miles.
It has sat for spells of 6 months to 2 years and rotted away.

1949 Willys: $1,700 (or $1,200, I don't remember) from a slightly drunk Kentuckian. $13,500 in receipts for parts, engine work, etc.
1988 Cherokee: $1,700 purchase price. About [edit] $7,000 over 7 years (including some very wasteful purchases).
2002 330Ci: $9,900 because I'm an idiot. $3,300 in maintenance and new parts (including a misdiagnosed DISA valve).

I have difficulty with this because of the difference between repairs, modifications, and modification-induced repairs. I think, though, that I've spent roughly $1500 on repair for the WRX since I've owned it (the turbo blew in 2012). $1800 if you count the time I didn't tighten the bolt holding the AC idler pulley on and it flew off and crashed into my timing cover.
Modifications, though...
Exhaust and first tune: $1000
Short shifter, SPT turbo heat shield: $100
Lowering springs and KYBs: $600
Rear sway bar: $200
Front sway bar: $150
Stromung muffler: $400
New taillights and fog lights: ~$200
New turbo: -$700 (amount I saved over replacing with OEM)
Intercooler and new tune: $400
Hella Supertones: ~$100
Stage 2 clutch and lightweight flywheel: $1200
Total: ~$3700

In the 3 years I've had it, not including tires, a little over 3k. That includes: Complete top end rebuild, rebuilt heads, head gaskets, timing belt, water pump, harmonic balancer, etc.

I probably spent a good bit less on my Rover. Lots of secondary value on parts we had going into it pretending were "free", though. Still, since the cost of my Rover was "this things a wreck, come and get it", a small amount X near zero makes the "spent" much closer to infinity percent of the purchase price.

In the 8 years and 150k miles I owned by B6 A4 Avant 1.8T (with a manual, of course) which I bought new:
Two sets of timing belt and roller changes...~ $1200
Cracked coolant flange: $400 I think
Two broken front window regulators (one in each door, the first time was covered under warranty): $400
New battery: $90
Faulty brake light switch: $100
Faulty window switch: $50
New brake rotors ~700
If I owned it for much longer it would have needed new front control arms, new shocks, and probably a new clutch (150k on the original). It also started consuming oil. The stock turbo was fine.

I spent 8.5 times what I originally spent on the Monte to restore it.
$1300 when I bought it.... too much into it.

Yes and it's daunting. My 06 Legacy GT that I bought in 2010 cost me: $27,957 for the 2.5 years I owned it. But that's gas, insurance, car payments, repairs, upgrades, etc.

Yep. Did the math on how much I spent on my paid-off Jeep over the course of a year, and did the math on a new truck.
New truck will cost significantly less to run over the next 3 years of the lease. My only costs will be fuel, payment, and 2 oil changes in that period (1st 4 are included). After that I intend to dump it and lease another one.
Plus, there's peace of mind from not having to worry about the stupid Jeep breaking something else expensive when I don't expect it.

2002 Mazda Miata bought in 2012 with 41,000 miles for $11,000. It now has 79,950 miles. Not counting normal maintenance & wear items (tires, fluids, windshield wipers, filters, brake pads & rotors) comes out to just more than $3,000, mostly because I decided to upgrade the suspension.
OE suspension upgrade to Ohlins coilovers: $2,500 installed.
New front bumper after hit by an SUV: $300 installed (insurance covered some, but I ponied up the $300 myself)
New windshield after a crack developed from a rock impact one day commuting to work: $315
1988 Mazda 323 GTX bought in September 2014 with 179,360 miles for $3,400. It now has 180,420 miles. I've spent about $500 in non-wear items.
New front struts: $400 installed
New front-right upper strut mount: $70
New front-right turn signal bulb: $5

touch wood the only repair I've had to pay is a replacement tailgate light for a Hilux I nudged with a bullbar. $30 on ebay for a pair.
and I self service my cars so I only ever pay for parts for non-scheduled maintenance.. I think the most I've paid was $100 for a second hand air conditioning pump for the old MR2.
