- Classy

- Street cred

- Police options

- Good MPG

- Ride quality

- Etc

I also have a feeling that since these cars have been the darlings of rental and law enforcement agencies, there's plenty of them out there so there's spare parts to spare for decades to come !

Other than being not BOF, I'm inclined to agree. Though I wouldn't touch a 2.7 (and possibly a 3.5) with a 100ft pole. Now a 2011+ 3.6 on the other hand...

It's easy to say "ewww, no" but it's more complicated to explain why.

I get that you don't like these cars, and it's fine with me, you can love your Prius, but please explain the beef you have with the LX cars.

They should be. Esp. considering the least good, of the good ones, still make 345hp & the 425hp versions are getting down there in price too. Waaay more than the, aahh, 250hp the panthers make.

I plan on buying one off the local department one day. The local units have the V6, but goodness they look awesome. White door paint, racing stripes on the hood and trunk, and a giant bullbar.

I love the Panthers, but their scheduled demise is worrying me at the point that I can't sleep at night.

You've literally driven the worst of the worst of the worst in terms of the LX platform. If that's all the experience I had I'd despise them too. But wait until you experience a 5.7 300c and you'll change your mind.

Despise was probably the wrong word to use. I don't like how they drive, and while the interior is spacious everything seems too far away and the wheel is uncomfortable in my opinion. Theyre alright cars but they're just kinda meh in my opinion. Might be the one Ive driven thats ruined this platform but its not what I like.

Also the prius isn't mine, its my families. And i don't like it all.

Isn't that an easy fix of swapping out to springs? I know fixing the Lincoln MK VIIIs is as easy as swapping to MN12 Tbird/cougar springs.

Like I said, no because Panthers are reliable and LX reliability is iffy. The newer ones aren't too bad but the early models were full of problems. The 2.7 is absolute sludge prone junk that was underpowered for such a large car. Automatic transmissions were also prone to failure and cop cars kept going through brakes.

There isn't really a successor to the Panther. It was the last car of its kind and now it's gone. I would say something like a Chevy Tahoe is a Panther successor even though it's an SUV. It's body on frame, V8, rear wheel drive and has similar driving characteristics.

Of course the Panthers are more comfortable for us large folks, I agree with that, I feel a bit tight myself in the LX, but that's like the last of the Mohicans for us proper cars lovers.

We live in a world where road cars are fitted (FiSTed) with Recarro seats, and people think it's a good thing. Makes me want to vomit. Why would one want to be strapped in on of these to go to work ?

Part of the Panther's appeal to fleets was the time-tested nature of the design and its truck-like durability. I don't think the LX cars have proven themselves yet. As an example, my hometown police department has bought exactly one new Charger since the end of Crown Vic production, but they've bought 3 lightly used Crown Victorias from the federal government in the same time.

I did move out, but my dad's the chief back home. He's always been pretty tight with the budget - buy two slightly used cars for less than one new one and run them for 120,000 miles. Their mechanic is kind of nervous about the Charger's prospects, but they had to start branching out sooner or later.

The ones in the LX cars were later versions that had the issues worked out. It was supposedly addressed in 2003-ish. Underpowerd, probably (never driven a 2.7 LX)

Edit: no more underpowered than a Panther though

My 3.5 powered Magnum has given me no problems so far, and it has 186,000 miles on it. Still runs like the day I got it with 10k. Very solid platform. The only parts that have failed from a mechanical perspective are the front outer tie rods and front lower control arms, which had to be replaced at 175k. Would have loved getting the Hemi, but this is my wife's car and she didn't need it.
