I definitely will be putting winter tires on my Miata some time soon. However, I am having trouble finding tires that will fit. Tirerack only returns two tires that will fit and so I am confused. I thought there would be more options available but perhaps, the stock rim size is not common? I have a 2001 Mazda Miata LS with the stock rims.
The sizes listed:
!!! UNKNOWN CONTENT TYPE !!!
The tires available:
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) for $480
!!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ( !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!! ) for $544
The problem appears to me to that the stock rims must be some odd size. I didn't really want to spend more to get rims but if that allows me better tire options, I can consider that.

Steelies maybe? And for tires the narrower the better.

If you try 185/55/16 you should be fine. Will make your car a bit taller and the sidewalls will not be square but for winter tires it shouldn't matter much unless you're planning on racing it in the winter.

I'd recommend a second set of wheels. It's convenient and better for your tires. It's not good for the bead to swap tires on and off a lot.

Well what I was thinking of doing was to use my stock rims for the winters and then getting a nicer set of rims for summer tires around April. The tires I have now are all seasons with around 50% tread anyways. I would not plan to swap the tires on and off the same rim.

Can I get any steel rims then? I don't really understand the dimensions of what would fit at that point. Tire rack just results in the same rims I have now.
