So its that time of year when we college kids get to take large tests that are worth way too much of our grade on things that will not matter to us in 3 weeks. EXAMS!! The level of stress being as high as it is i relish the time i can spend relaxing for any length of time. Being a bit of a nerd (and an engineer) i decided to do some cadding and dig through the archives of cad models ive created over the years and i found this:

Kinja'd!!!

I started this project a long time ago (sophomore year of highschool) and worked on it for about a week in my engineering design class... then had to work on other projects that actually mattered for my grade. This is a one-off design with the front wing being loosely based on the Red Bull of the time. (dont remember what)

Here is a detail of the front wing:

Kinja'd!!!

I didnt really know what i was doing at the time (now i have much more experience) but it looks fast so it probably is right?? Im still working on my STAR CCM+ skills and until then i wont know if/how much downforce it may/may not make.

Im probably gonna start a redesign sometime in the future so any feedback would be appreciated. Also a link to the cad of the front wing: !!!error: Indecipherable SUB-paragraph formatting!!!

I went to school to be an engineer. Didn't work out but I really enjoyed drafting. Creating is what fascinates me, not memorizing physics and calculus formulae. Probably contributed to my current career. I'm a creator at heart, just not one with any artistic skill.

I miss having access to solidworks. My new degree path in school gives me access to some cool programs, but I liked working with solidworks for the year and a half I was a CAD drafter for a company in Clackamas. The program is way to expensive for someone to buy for recreational use.

That's more than I can do with solidworks at the moment. I had a faff on mating 12 cylinder into a 4x3 grid...

For a brief moment there I thought that was CATIA and was going to throw salt and holy water at you.

Solid works is eh okay in my book.

Same here. Started out in engineering school and graduated with a degree in Design/Drafting.

I went to Engineering School (Construction Engineering AKA Management) now I have a job designing Commercial Tapered Flat Roof Designs with CAD Programs. Yep. Never thought I'd be doing that, haha.

I dont want to be an engineer because i like math or physics (english is my best subject). I just really enjoy tinkering and making things.

Hahaha no way! People who can use CATIA proficiently amaze me. My experience is limited to Solidworks, NX, Autodesk, and PTC Creo.

Yeah that's what I believed. I actually enjoyed my engineering classes, it was the other stuff I hated.

Predicted CFD results:

Lift: -130 pounds.

Drag: 350+ pounds.

I'm in the same boat and enjoy the creation aspect what did you end up doing?

Did you actually run CFD?? at what speed and flow conditions??

Something completely different. I'm a journalist.

No, I did not. It was a tongue-in-cheek answer coming from my own aerodynamic experiments, where something that looks like it produces downforce really doesn't create any and instead makes a metric ton of drag.
