Coming home form tennis practice today, I performed my usual driving ritual. From my club to my home, there are two routes. one is 4 miles long, but boring an always full of traffic, the other is 6.5 miles long and on many occasions, very empty. I always take the long way home, regardless of the stuff I have to do after practice.
This road includes a straightaway that runs through a park that is exactly one mile long. Almost no one takes this road, since after the mile- long straightaway, there's a sharp set of uphill turns, which makes it quite long in contrast to the other very straight road.
As I get on this road, I drop the car in to 1st, slow down to about 10 mph, and then I nail it. Held it till 5000RPM in 1st, and then slammed it in to 2nd.
Now in 2nd, I decided "why not see if I can hit 60 in 2nd gear?" Guess what? you can, but VERY high in the RPM range.
How high? well my redline's 6000, and I shifted at almost 7000.... Here's the thing; due to the cold weather, the 2L TSI packs a lot of wallop in the midrange, and runs amazingly! Over 5500RPM? not so much... You can feel the car topping off, and the surge of acceleration is gone, until you go for 3rd and keep accelerating!
Do all turbo cars do this stuff? If so, I might just go N/A or supercharged next time around....

The next time you put out a post regarding something else breaking on your GLI I'm just going to link you to this one as an explanation why.

Turbocharged cars usually fall flat on their face after a certain rpm past peak.

it's ok, it takes a beating well! hasn't thrown a CEL in over a month now, and is running like a top!
and yeah, I drive my car hard occasionally... That's why it's got a warranty!

Redline at 6,000 rpm on that little 2L mill?! Shit my mom's Vue is like 6,500!
That might be VW telling you to shift so it doesn't fall flat on its face like you said it did though.

Turbo engines usually have a low-ish redline compared to NA engines. It does over-rev though according to a quick Google search.

yeah.. I've seen DSG's in Auto mode go to 6,800RPM before, so I know it can do it, I just don't like to...
also VW under-rates their redlines quite a bit, since the fuel cutoff in my mom's jetta is at over 7,000 RPM!

I do the same, I have the optional route the ends up taking around the same time but no traffic and 20kms of no traffic lights, a good section of the road used to be gravel and was an awesome road for power sliding around long sweeping bends, it's recently been sealed and is a great road to drive with fury!

bragging that my car tapers off above 5500RPM? How's that bragging? if anything, it's the opposite of bragging...

After I got all the little things sorted out, it's been a really reliable car for me! now I just need to detail it... it's been waaaaay too long since I washed the exterior...

"redline"
"Detail"
"Washed"
"60 mph"
These terms confuse me!

woah dude, I wasn't looking to pick a fight, relax...
maybe you missed the part where I said this was on an empty road, with no traffic? And don't tell me you don't drive your car hard from time to time man, because we all do. This was the first time in well over 2 weeks that I got my car up and over 5000RPM, and the first time I've done over 60mph (excluding freeway driving) in over 3 weeks!
I'm pretty sure people will agree that the occasional spirited drive is allowed

Education hill, actually! I live just down the road from Redmond High School! So that's just west of Novelty hill! I love the roads at the bottom of novelty hill rd.(the ones in the general direction of Carnation) They're great to drive on

http://oppositelock.jalopnik.com/an-apology-165… And I believe the last time spawned this, no?
There's a big difference between a spirited drive and "let's see if I can literally rev my valves out of my engine".

The EA888 2.0T engine is one of those awesome 4 pot units. VAG tends to underrate them, in VW applications it's listed as 207lbs.ft TQ where it actually produces ~230lbs.ft. In Audi applications (Valvelift engine - more torque less lag) it's listed as 258lbs.ft where it actually produces north of 270lbs.ft (APR dynoed it producing 290lbs.ft!).
I believe the Mk7 GTI has a Valvelift unit too, so it should be more responsive.

...It was caused by me complaining about my car and the CEL it threw after I drove it like a complete idiot for too long.
If you think I'm complaining here, I'm not. I just find it interesting how the powerband tapers off so sharply past a certain point.
and on the note of "revving my valves off", I'm sure you'll find that the DSG-equipped GTI/GLI's rev up to 7K RPM before upshifting for the driver. If VW wasn't certain that the car could do that, then why would they let it go that high with an Automatic transmission?
I know my car well enough, and one pull up in to the red won't do anything to hurt it.

huh... I thought that it legit made only about 210ft-lbs... That's nice to know!
and yeah, it's an amazing unit! I love it! can't wait to get an APR stage one tune, and the carbonio CAI for it! :D

They are nice semi-curvy roads southbound yes, but a the real fun is going northbound (left) on W Snoqualmie Valley Rd towards snohomish. Lots of speed changes and sharp turns and hills. Although you may want to wait until the black ice all melts this weekend.

The stuff is the taper at the end. I feel that a larger displacement engine wouldn't have the same kind of feeling to it
and I know about those... ;)

"...It was caused by me complaining about my car and the CEL it threw after I drove it like a complete idiot for too long."
Regularly driving at 130mph on a public road, if I remember correctly. Seems like you haven't exactly stopped driving it like an idiot, either. I never said you were complaining, I said you drive like an asshole.
They let it happen because manual mode, and you're better off having an automatic upshift than a fuel cutoff.

Ames-Lake Carnation is to be used with caution. Where it meets the city limits of what is technically Sammamish, there is often a speedtrap in the form of a well-hidden Ford Explorer belonging to the Sammamish police force. Speed limit is also annoyingly listed at 40 at that point, which admittedly makes sense because while the roads aren't sharp at all, the vision is pretty poor.

Oh, I've encountered that explorer, trust me. It was after i drove quick on W Snoqualmie, and was heading in that direction to find a gas station (i haven't explored much that way yet...)
and seriously, if i see a blue tercel mobbing down the road, i'll give you a friendly beep as i overtake you ;)

All engines have a peak hp and peak torque point.

The stock tuning on FSI's and TSI's generally allows very high peak boost in the middle of the rpm range, with boost tapering off a bit at redline. Pair this with a relatively small turbo and you get a big midrange with little turbo lag, but the feeling that it falls on its face at higher rpm.
Software from a good tuner such as GIAC, UM or APR can help with making the engine produce more power at the upper reaches of the rpm band, between a combination of altering the timing and fuel maps and holding more boost.
My Golf R felt much more linear after GIAC Stage 1 and the Neuspeed intake.
