So the IFD is accepting applications for firefighters the next two weeks and my buddy and I are planning on road tripping down from Chicago to submit cause they have to be submitted iin person. Anyone in the area know what it's like? I mean chicago firefighters see a lot of shit with the south side being a warzone and downtown being crazy so I was wondering if anyone knew how Indy compared other than having a superior football team.

Indy is like Chicago light. You may run into more Meth Labs there.
Most of the major metro areas in the midwest are like that though.

I love Indy. As far as IFD goes, I'm not sure about that. I have neighbors who work for IPD and like that.

I live in the suburbs but have been downtown plenty of times and never once felt unsafe. I mean, there's some scary neighborhoods but you'll find that in any big city and they're few and far between. Since the Super Bowl a few years ago there's been a lot of gentrification and revitalization so the sketchier areas of the city are getting better, not that there were that many to begin with, and a lot of areas like Broad Ripple and Fountain Square are really progressive, interesting places that you would be totally fine bringing kids up in.
Indy's nicknamed Naptown because it's a pretty laid-back city compared to other places like Chicago and St. Louis. It's a lot less dangerous, too, just stay away from the East side and you should be fine.

The East side isn't even terrible(if you aren't stupid) to go to and it doesn't go far east, by the time you hit Hancock County you're in the clear again.
Edit: I believe Naptown also came from a couple decades ago when there was even less to do.

I've never found the East side too bad either but other people have apparently found it to be hell on Earth if Zionsville soccer moms and housewives are to be believed. And didn't know the the origin of 'Naptown', I was always told it was because this place is a pretty chill town, which I guess can be a side effect of being a kinda boring city like it was in the 70s and 80s (according to my parents, at least).
