Only if they get properly driven, and not just some prop for their Ashburn/McLean McMansion :P

You mean those people have interesting cars? I always figured they drove MDXs and 5 series with technology that disabled their car if they tried to escape the gated McMansion communities, but this brings a whole aspect of willingness to live in such McMansions into play...
Maybe that's why they're scared to drive them.

I'm fairly normal and I could be making enough in a few years to pull off a R8...I mean, UPS driver isn't a rich person job.
![]() 11/30/2014 at 22:52 |

I was only joking, but how is being a UPS driver? I always have thought of that as an option, and they pay and promotion opportunities seem good. I don't plan on any expenses other than what I need and I'd probably end up budgeting a decent portion for cars, so I understand what you mean.

What else are you supposed to buy when the divorce settlement comes in or your mari-er, startup takes off? College education for your kids? Safe investments? What will the other people on Ashburn Place or Belmont Country Club think?
You can almost feel the judgement...
![]() 11/30/2014 at 23:08 |

The problem tends to lie in those little gremlins like emergencies or even daily expenses. You may think you've saved enough, but then your water bill comes in, or your insurance doesn't cover something that it clearly should. Or your R8 needs any sort of maintenance.

Hah. Normal people own Fieros? I thought I at least was on the second rung of weird sports car owners...
But I would honestly own a Mondial in a heartbeat. I couldn't afford one. So maybe the Fiero is the normal car.

Haha so true. My uncle lives in Ashburn, but in one of those small townhouse communities. I had no idea there were McMansions there.

![]() 11/30/2014 at 23:31 |

Yeah, that's the way I understand things. Mondials and 308/328s aren't ridiculously costly to own, but there's no way you're going to have an easy fix for big repairs on any later exotic cars, and even on the "simple" ones things aren't cheap.

I drive my family's MDX. And I live in McLean. Derp. I mean there are 6 people living in our house. And at least 8 people in it during the day. We use
all
the space. And we don't have expensive cars. I mean the MDX is expensive but we've been leaving the MDX since 2000 ('01, '06, '11, '12, '14) *Insert obligatory
AM I THE ONLY ONE AROUND HERE
meme* IS our family the only family in this side of the DMV that isn't composed trust funded and botox-ego inflated jerks??
My dad and my brothers and I all are inner hoons but our family can't afford any extra cars so we just share the MDX and my dad's Infiniti to commute three of us boys to George Mason and the rest of us to work. No manuels. :( My mom drives both so they both have to be automatic.)
Its weird living surrounded by rich people with 80k+ cars, when you're not rich, just good-to-go. You just work your ass off.
Idk the rich people around here drive their 5 series and MDX's and ML63s and Ranges and G500s and Q7-S and F-Types....while texting. With sunglasses on at 6pm. McLean and Ashburn....most DMV drivers are ass-butts.
My brother is a brave soul jogging up and down our street.
I have to agree. There are some delightful cars that are obviously used as props around here.

Wow, that's really similar to my experience. I live in Alexandria, but in a large and now expensive townhouse community (so basically the suburbs). It was cheap 15 years ago. And there were 6 people living in here a few years back and it was packed (long story short, your dad marries a strange woman, her children move in, and hey look they're kind of nuts). Anyways, the net worth of the garage is less than a new Corolla and most people are driving around in new luxury cars here, so I know the surrounded-by-people-to-whom-you-are-poors feel. Here I am saving up for a clutch while that lobbyist guy is paying for a second X5. First world problem.

I used to live in Kingstowne (an Alexandria address) before it got developed. I was born in '93 in Arlington. I lived on Windsor Avenue, not far from the Kingstowne theatre/TopGolf/Walmart, etc. (which wasn't there when I was little) They broke ground for the Safeway shortly before I moved to McLean in '02? My grandparents both ran stores in Springfield mall. The physical area of our house was probably roughly bigger than a 7-11. Which is a lot in global terms, but it was a tiny-ass American house.

It's a lot more difficult then the average person would think, and it's super stressful. But that's coming from a driver who's only been driving since March and got put on one of the worst routes in the building atm. It pays good, and the benefits are amazing
![]() 11/30/2014 at 23:58 |

Wow, I can't even remember Kingstowne before it was developed. I don't care for the area much now, though—just urban sprawl. My mom's two siblings are in McLean, actually... But it must've been cool for your grandparents to have stores in Springfield mall. Haven't been in years, but I think it's been re-opened. All I know is that driving here is hell and I'd like to eventually go somewhere that's a bit less of suburban expanse and all.
![]() 12/01/2014 at 00:02 |
|
True. I don't recognize the place. Tyson's is (or has) experiencing the same urban transformation.
The freaking neighbors tore down good third of our tree line this year (violating county laws, legal sitch is complicated) in building two new houses and their yards. Now we hear hammers at 530AM and the screeching of the Metro trains' brakes just under two miles away (the metro opened a few months ago.)
This used to feel like the countryside.
What. Is. Going. On.
I'd rather live in the city
or
the country. Not a suburbia with toll roads and an identity crisis.
![]() 12/01/2014 at 00:03 |

I've heard that, and I wouldn't doubt it. I think I remember you posting that it was hugely stressful right after you started work there. The pay is certainly attractive, and the prospect of moving up helps. My sister's boyfriend did part time work during the holidays and said it seemed like a great career route, especially for not requiring a college degree.

I'm out in Ashburn, and I'll confess I come from a wealthy family ( especially on my mom's side, good Lord) and we've had our share of flashy rides. BMW's, a Jaaag S Type (for 2 weeks), Acura TL, etc. But my dad was/is a car guy, and saved his monies while working up the ladder. Ironically, he just traded his 5er for an Accord v6 Touring. It has more to do with his health than his finances (looong story).
Now, I live in a fairly young street (mostly parents <35 with little kids), and just sticking my head out the window, I see a Maseratti, S6, STS, M5, ES, GT3, Tesla, etc. One dude has car payments that are higher than his house! Some of these belong to one person. I can't really judge (my dad got a then-new 7 series when he was 38 as a gift from my mom's father), but I just have to go really? Who are you trying to impress?
![]() 12/01/2014 at 00:14 |

It's like 60/35/4/1 (60% McMansions, 35% townhouses, 4% regular houses, and 1% condos) :P

"normal person" is saying people with less money are inferior which is obviously not true. I dive a MT Mazda and i love it.
![]() 12/01/2014 at 07:52 |

No offense intended! I just mean normal/avg in terms of wealth vs "rich." I drive a $5,000 car with a MT and I enjoy it, but it's not easy to own many gated manual cars other than a Mondial on an average budget.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 16:39 |

Yeah, used to be very different. Driving down route 7 past Tyson's hasn't been nice for decades, but at least 15 years ago it wasn't hellish. Same goes for the rest of the general area. And sorry about the trees! People seem to hate them in the DC metro area, and it's not even legal to take down trees above a certain size. That's pretty unfortunate they put the silver line so close by—do you at least have use for it?
![]() 12/03/2014 at 16:40 |

Yes! And the 3.4. The Valero automatic clutch transmission is also cool because they catered to the type of people who caused the death of the gates in the new cars but also have the gated shifter.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 16:42 |

Ah ok. Pretty much like the surrounding area. I'd hate to be making some Ashburn to DC commute without at least having a house, though.

Yeah. Probably not so much as the FF, though; AWD, AT, comfortable interior, 4 seats, and luggage capacity. The only thing that really matters is the badge, of course.
![]() 12/03/2014 at 21:44 |

The FF is for people that need to have a Ferrari and can afford a new Ferrari. They probably also have a 458 and a F12 in the garage, with a Cayenne Turbo for the wife.

I never heard of it!
![]() 12/05/2014 at 21:59 |

It's based off the 348, so much more expensive to own. The 3.2 is my favorite. In the end, I'd have to get a 328GTS, because I could look into the eyes of some brat in a 458 and make him think one of two things:
"Why is that Magnum P.I. wannabe in his cheap, old car looking at me?"
"I am only half the Ferrari driver that guy is. He probably owns a C4 Corvette and Saab 9000 as well, the kind that set speed records at Talladega thanks to Swedish ingenuity!" (I'll just assume the second one.)
How is all in Rustoland? (i.e. that one date who knew F1?). I just saw that notification yesterday while going back through my old notifications.
![]() 12/08/2014 at 23:58 |

I can't believe I never heard of this car! So it's a Mondial based off the 348? Crazy! I thought the Mondial died when the 328 was replaced.
Haha those quotes are awesome. Now you need to add a Mondial 3.2 and Saab 9000 to the C4. You will be a hero!
Things are ok in Rustoland. Oh haha the girl who knew F1 ended up being super boring. But I just met a new girl who loves cars even more and wants to go racing! We got dinner last night and then went to a shooting range after (her idea). She's a total tomboy!
Check out my new username and post I just made, haha

I know, it's like they didn't learn their lesson at all! I will meet a lot of strange people owning those cars. But it must be done. For the outcasts.
And awesome, never held a gun but that sounds like a pretty good scenario! Loves cars=time to get married. Not hasty at all.
And that was glorious, Manuél Ferrari. You are a folk legend already. Godspeed, and may the spirit of the third pedal shield you from the evils of commercial Ferrari. It won't be easy to un-tame the prancing horse, but if anyone can do such a thing, it's Inigo Montoy- er, Manuél Ferrari. Unfortunately the Lamborghini has succumbed to a German bull-fighter, but perhaps there is hope in Maranello.
![]() 12/09/2014 at 21:32 |

Hastiness is good, haha. Otherwise we overthink things and nothing gets done.
Haha thanks. I shall spread the gospel and bring Ferrari back to glory.
I need to start by finding a way to sell my two paddle shift M3s without losing a ton of money. Hard to do since I haven't had them for that long so I'll lose a ton on sales tax alone if I sell them now...

People really do overthink things. It's a symptom of living in an information era. James Garner dated his wife every day for two weeks from day one and they were married for something like 58 years, anyhow. It sucks that it's so hard to recoup money spent on cars; the C4 is going to turn into a constant source of financial anguish and still won't be worth a used Yaris if I were to own it for years and years, slowly restoring it. The upside is that, after I put a new clutch, PS pump, etc. in, there won't be any worry over how much I spent to begin with! You'll need quite a successor to follow up two M3s, but there's plenty of amazing stuff out there. I'd have trouble passing up a 328GTS , though. By far the coolest car to get spanked by the C4 in showroom stock! They're on my list of badge-tax cars along with the 3.2 Carrera. Top of my list for $30,000, though, is the 3200cs. Aluminum pushrod V8 (160hp) and 4 speed from the 507, gorgeous Bertone styling that influenced BMWs since, and just a great character.

wow the 328 prices are too damn high! Look at the mileage on that car!
I had not heard of that last car. Very interesting. How often do they come for sale?
![]() 12/15/2014 at 20:29 |

I'd be far too compulsive over a low-miles example, but I agree to an extent on the bubble that the 328 has been experiencing. Still costs less than a 360 or 348 (which are a bit boring for a Ferrari IMO) or a 355 (which is too much to repair when something goes wrong). 308QV is the sweet spot, probably. Wouldn't say no to a 3.2 Mondial, as you said, but it's far from gorgeous.
The CS is very rare. Just over 600 produced. Here's what I know about the sale in the US.
http://www.rmauctions.com/lots/lot.cfm?l…
With a good mechanic and classic car insurance, it's probably a good (but hard to come by) investment that you can drive somewhat cheaply. Parts would be pricey, but they were somewhat universal to contemporary BMW models.

omg give me dat BMW! i want now, plz
ah i think you need to challenge your ferrari assumptions. the 328 doesn't really cost less than a 360 anymore! you can buy a 360 F1 with the same number of miles as a 328 for less than that 328. it's crazy!
