"Logansteno: Bought a VW?" (logansteno)

So I was building an Impala LS and I noticed that the "wheels" are actually 18 inch styled steel wheels with a plastic cover designed to look like an alloy wheel.
I know the Big 3 used to be big on doing this, everything from lowly economy cars to full-size sedans coming from American had them a few years ago. The amount of previous-generation Malibus I see with one missing is ridiculous. But I thought companies had stopped doing this strange cost-cutting procedure.
What's worse is that they're doing this on a car that costs $27k. Twenty-Seven grand and you can't put some real alloy wheels on there, yet the $23k Malibu gets them?

LOL, those look like they came straight out of the '90's/early-'00's.

Those are horrible, why the extra spokes? Like if they are going to bother with steelies, they should at least make the hubcaps look less horrible.

On compacts and subcompacts, yeah. Ford doesnt do it on the Taurus and I doubt anyone else does it. Seems like GM being GM.

They look like leftovers from the old W-Body Impala from 2002.

GM likes extra spokes. It's like they design the plain 5-spoke then think it needs more. They ruined the nice 5-spoke wheels on the High Country Silverado by doing the same thing.

THOSE SPOKES ARE SOOO UNNECESSARY.

They've ruined what would otherwise be a damn good looking set of wheels.

I'm pretty sure dodge still does this on all their trucks. They look chrome but they're actually covers.

Holy shit those are hideous. Those look like something from 10 years ago, who at GM thought those were ok to put on a new car?

That's how most are, you couldn't hardly tell until one fell off.

A lot of very base model economy cars get them on base trim. Think Toyota Yaris. It surprises me on a 2014 Imapal ,I've never seen one with those wheels IRL.

I see this on all brands. GM likes to put plastic hub caps on 5 spoke steel wheels. Which IMO look nice, the steel wheels that is.
Also many other companies will use plastic chrome covers that are glued to steel or sometimes aluminum wheels.
I own dead car brands only

Dont be so negative. Think of this way, 18" steelies!

Even when they fall off, the cars' steelies look pretty cool.

Like just about everyone else, I hate my plastic covers, and the scale and scratches they collect. I wish I could just buy small covers for the hubs and let the steelies show. What's wrong with that?

Doesn't Toyota do that, too, with the RAV4?
