Just for kicks, I did a search for used Unimogs online. Crikey, are they expensive - even a really old one was listed at $30k. This got me thinking - what would a poor man's unimog be? A deuce-and-a-half? A lifted pickup truck?

Probably a CUCV. You can easily get one of those below 2500.

Now that you've shown me, I want to. Much much cheaper than a unimog. I bet a person could build one heck of a camper on that beast.

Really people? Jalopnik (EDIT Blipshift) editor's had the same solution to this as I've dreamed...The Volvo C303.
More people-space than a 'mog, currently half the price and still comes with portal axles....How did I not see this until now?? I think I was moving in to my apartment-Link to the article http://truckyeah.jalopnik.com/the-squarest-v…

I saw this as well. They seem pretty rare though.

As my old sargent used to say, no trucks today. We are taking APCs. A Pied Collisse (on foot shithead).
(Yes my Franch is muy terriblé, but you should hear my Spanish)
