A sony 5100, a 50mm 1.8 for portraits, a 35mm 1.8 for everything else. I found I prefered the 5100 over the a6000 due to the better ergonomics, smaller size, its textured surface, better battery life, and the fact that it's still the 24 megapixel aps-c powerhouse the a6000 is. Also it cost almost half the price of the a6000 so there's that.

E-Mount lenses are awesome. I like how they feel because they are made out of metal.

Spend a bit more and get the 50mm 1.4 - when I had D1X/F100 combo, that was the lens I used most. 1.4 super fast in low light.

What is the point of taking one 50 1.8 and one 35 1.8?
They are way too close... if this is an apsc camera, just take the 35mm and take some kind of zoom lens as a second lens... but two like those is useless and from experience the 50mm 1.8 is not very practical on an apsc camera...

I agree. When I had an APS-C I had a Sigma 30mm/1.4 and 50mm/1.4 and actually used the 30mm more. I would suggest an 85mm 1.8 or 1.4 if it is available. I think if he is really into portraiture a zoom lens wouldn't work so well.

Yeah, I think I'll just end up getting the 35.

Nice choice. I agree with Flavian. Just get the 35mm, then pick up a 55-200mm or similar lens.
I look forward to seeing some pictures. You're on Photography Kinja right?
