I was going through old family pictures with my girlfriend when I found all these old negatives from my grandpa's time in WWII. He went ashore immediately after the Japanese surrender and traded a pack of cigs for a cheap camera. Gonna get these developed ASAP.
Also in the box was this awesome Hawaii overprint note. For those who don't know, after Pearl Harbor was attacked the government was genuinely concerned that the Japanese would return with their full fleet and invade Hawaii - and in the process gain control of every scrap of US currency located there. To pre-empt this possibility, the government recalled all the cash on the islands and re-issued overprinted notes with HAWAII stamped across the back. That way, in the event of an invasion, the government could declare all Hawaiian notes seized by the Japanese worthless. The shit we used to come up with!

Sweet! Here's my pop's boat - he was on an oiler. A Japanese sub almost blew them up while they were stopped in a bay, but the torpedo ended up passing under the ship and sank the one next to his. I am here because a Japanese submariner had shitty aim!

At least the submariner responsible for me was better! My grandfather served on nukes from 71-76!
