I always liked their car, but sometimes enough is enough. Any suggestions on how to help my Aunt talk my Uncle into not spending $2200 for suspension and wheel bearing work on their 1998 Legacy Wagon that they already spent another $2000 tuning up (and getting shocks, struts, and body work)?

Set it on fire?

If it's a good running car it might be worth it, vs dropping another $5-15k on another car. Body work probably isn't worth it if it's just cosmetic. Of course I know nothing about it but I'm just offering a second opinion.

4200 into a car that is 16 years old. It old, more things are going to break, and its just keeping a sick dog alive. let it go, get something else.

That seems to be his point. The engine does run fine. I'm just concerned that if suspension stuff keeps going they're going to be in an even bigger pit.

The terrible bit? I love them but they keep all their sick dogs alive too long.

This is why I will never tell anyone how much I've spent on my wagon. People on here might run me over at a crosswalk. "Sorry man, but it's the only way to separate you from that thing *downshifts to second gear*"

Sell it to me? My 96 Legacy's suspension is good but needs CV joints I can combine them into one complete car LOL

If I can help her convince him to get rid of it and you're around Baltimore, sure.

It would help to know what exactly needed done. With the prices you mentioned, it sounds like your Uncle isn't doing the work himself. If that's the case, it's probably time to move on. Being a manual, some Subaru enthusiast will probably snap that up pretty quickly, depending on the condition and mileage.

Yeah, his mechanical skills only really extend to carpentry/remodeling and he has a crazy schedule.

Yeah, my relatives in New Mexico only own all trucks, all of the time.

$2,200 would go a decent way into getting something newer, not including what they could get for the '98 (especially in a private sale). Maybe something like this , or this . Of course, I have no idea what potential budget, vehicle age/mileage, or vehicle needs your aunt and uncle have.

You're definitely right. Pretty much the point I was trying to help my Aunt make.

Just buy used WRX suspension off NASIOC on the cheap and install it yourself. Fix it for LE$$ and make it handle LIKABAUSS

You're making me want a WRX Wagon

My Aunt and Uncle are actually debating the merits of just that.

Nice!

Are those WRX wagons starting to appreciate yet?

It still seems like they're getting pretty solid price quotes. They're also looking at Saab 9-2xes because my Uncle is still a Saab fan.

can you get that Saaaaaaaab with Manuél?

But of course. Both of the ones they've driven have been manuals.

Hmm. That's another interesting wagon that I could one day purchase with Manuél inside.

I've never had a wagon. If I ever buy one it will have to be Manuél. Then I will have the Jalopnik/Oppo cool car.

Update:

This is actually what we did and it works great, though she still wants a new one and is upset about the lack of available manuals at Subaru dealers.

(I love my Aunt.)
