That looks like a good way to slice up your own wrists... It would make more sense to use cortosis to make a normal style sword hilt, although EU stuff is apparently non-canon so ¯\_()_/¯

A cheap way for creators to make a different kind of light saber despite the fact that having two deadly points where there would be a hilt would really screw things up.

It's creation went like this:

Guy A: The new Sith Lord has to have a unique weapon.

Guy B: We've used everything already that could make sense.

Guy C: What's better than 1 light saber?

Guy A: Two, duh. We've already gone that route.

Guy C: No, light saber with mini ones attached like a hilt.

Guy B: Won't he just cut or stab himself?

Guy C: Probably. We'll just say he's a master something or other to explain it away.

Guy A: Perfect. And we can have him stab people with them when he fighting several people at once or a hero when we do the usual hero/villain over done and drawn out sword fight.

Guy C: Our work is done here for the day. Let's get lunch.

As lightsabers go, I'd imagine a pretty bad idea. Or a great way to potentially stab yourself or cut your own wrist off.

Maybe it's some kind of "Mad Max" style lightsaber tt uses a different kind of power source that is more rudimentary and doesn't last forever?

I know literally nothing about Star Wars, just had a random thought

It's been used before in comics.

The most disappointing part of the trailer by far. Perhaps we should focus on THE FREAKING FALCON DOGFIGHTING TIES IN ATMOSPHERE.

Okay, why do people always nitpick so much about this stuff? Lightsabers are daft weapons by their very nature, for Pete's sake! It doesn't stop them from being fucking awesome. Oh, and speaking of awesome...

Kinja'd!!!

There were actual tears in my eyes.

The whole idea behind why only Jedi use lightsabers is that they're some of the only individuals in the universe with the reaction time and spatial awareness necessary to wield one without cutting bits of themselves off. That exact same conceit could apply here.

...

I'm so glad that most of the Internet seems to have taken a day-off from the usual cynicism today. That trailer looked utterly brilliant.

Lightsabers are kind of a gimmick just by themselves...

Probably for the same reason that people nitpicked about nuking the refrigerator. There's sometimes a limit to suspension of disbelief.

Kinja'd!!!1

If that lightsaber's where the limit's drawn, in this universe of magical powers, starships and blaster guns, then I really have absolutely no conception of how suspension of disbelief works any more.

I don't necessarily love the bloody thing myself, but... I don't know, the Internet's constant, neverending, knee-jerk, endless cynical, snide arsery just really annoys me sometimes. And I'm British! I consider cynical snideness part of the national character!

Probably because if you made an actual sword with blades for hilt guards it would cut the hell out of your wrists?

11/28/2014 at 11:32

Kinja'd!!!0

But Jedi! Mythical powers, that grant super-fast reaction speed and ultra-acute spacial awareness! I mean, that's how they're supposed to be able to use any variety of lightsaber safely in the first place.

11/28/2014 at 11:32

Kinja'd!!!0

The difference being that in a normal lightsaber the blade is pointing away from you, whereas this one points inward. The whole need to be a jedi thing is because the blade has no inertia so you need the force to track where it is, in this case the extra blades make it so that you are extra limited in how you can move the main blade.

Kinja'd!!! pauljones > KirkyV
11/28/2014 at 11:32

Kinja'd!!!0

It could. I still find the idea a little odd.

That being said, I'm glad to see you're enjoying and putting as much effort into nitpicking the opinions of others as everyone else is expressing their reactions to a new trailer for a follow-on to one of the most legendary epics of modern time.

People have their opinions. Why are you putting so much effort into arguing and invalidating them, especially when the topic of those opinions is just a movie trailer?

But like I said in the other post, these blades make it less useful than if you have made the T section out of cortosis or phric

Indeed. So, the fighting style that makes use of this weapon must, then, place particular emphasis on precision, and intimidation.

...

Or, I suppose he could just turn the extra bits off when he's not using them.

11/28/2014 at 11:40

Kinja'd!!!0

So... you're being cynical, bitchy, and opinionated at others because you think they are being too cynical, bitchy, and opinionated?

Congratulations, you've personified the internet.

It's one thing to disagree with the opinion and state the argument as you did in the first paragraph of your initial comment, and argue within context. It's altogether different to do that, and then implicitly assert that people are too cynical, bitchy, and opinionated over a fictional universe.

Don't be a dick.

You had a good hypothetical argument to start with; stick with that. Leave the judgmental crap at home.

11/28/2014 at 11:41

Kinja'd!!!0

I agree that it'd make more sense to simply construct the guard out of cortosis... But, so far as I'm aware, they've yet to actually show any material that can resist lightsaber blades in any of the films, and I suppose they may not want to muddy the waters by introducing something that the 'weapon that can cut through anything' can't cut through.

Besides, it'd be less intimidating. And Sith Lords are generally great fans of intimidation.

I didn't know that. However, reading the wiki shows me only 1 (easier to deal with) and it's at an angle which means less likely to stab oneself because it doesn't protrude as far out.

SoD is an arbitrary line set according to each and every person's own standards and expectations. Because there is no Bureau Of Standards and Practices regarding SoD, not everyone will have drawn the line in the same spot as you have, and having that line crossed will take people out of the story in a way they find unpleasent.

For me...it just looks weird. It makes me wonder why a Sith Lord would want to have that. What is that going to do for you that a standard saber couldn't? Impale people? Decapping is faster and more efficient. Block other sabers? The 'saber' bit still needs a slice-able emission point from the hilt. Wouldn't the opponent just cut right through that? Instill fear in others? You're already a psychopath wielding a near-as-makes-no-difference Subtle Knife with god-like powers to back you up. If all that doesn't scare someone, what hope does a goofy looking lightsaber mod have? I personally don't think it's reasonable to expect a sith lord to mod a weapon (or use a version of a weapon) that would make life difficult for him alone with no clear or obvious advantages, even given that the force would help make it safer to wield.

But if the hilt isn't lightsaber resistant than the first time the hilt gets hit the blade will slide into the fork and slice it in half. The only waY I see this working is if it somehow seeks out the opposing blade and is repelled by the users wrist.

It kinda looks like a tesla coil plasma arc so I feel like this has a distinct possibility of being what they are planning to do. I have no idea how they are going to handwave away the whole emo wrist cutting action that would happen though, other than what I already suggested.

I understand that. It just seems incredibly arbitrary to me. It's sort of... If I allowed myself to be annoyed by that, then I'd have to also be annoyed by all the close-range dogfighting in human-piloted starfighters with see-through canopies, and the turrets that require a WWII-style gunner, and a great many other things.

I'd like to make it clear that I never intended to cause offence, as I seem to have done to pauljones in particular.
