I think I'm going to tint the high beams on the 240 yellow like these guys, because it looks awesome. Mine is silver and will be getting slammed come Saturday so I figure I might as well give it a full makeover while I'm at it. The other question I have has to do with the hood. The paint is shot and I have been toying with the idea of painting it for a while... think I should do it as a giant Swedish flag?

Tint, yes. Flag, no.

Tint the high beams (I'll be doing it to my fog lights) and I like the flag idea as long as it is executed properly and doesn't look half-assed.

Does this have a purpose or is it just just cosmetic?
![]() 11/27/2014 at 20:54 |

Just cosmetic, my high beams don't even work.

Hmmmm, I'd be spraying it and properly masking/clear coating so it should look like factory paint, just a white cross in a blue field.

Y no flag?

Tint, and do the flag.

It's gonna be like the most anti-redneck things evar.

Don't you mean yellow cross? As long as it looks better than patchy blue and yellow rattlecan.

Oh no, it would be redneck as fuck, just Swedish redneck. It would be like the General Swede.

Yeah, yeah, that one. This is purely in the conceptual stages at this point(as you can tell). And nah, it'll be properly covered and buffed and all.

That's what I meant. Like... it'd be a perfect statement on the state of culture in these here parts.

True. I do live like 5 minutes where Top Gear painted their vehicles.

I think I need to just get drunk and paint it.

My opinion is unless it's a beater no flag. But it's something I wouldn't do. It maybe a good conversation piece. Tint the lights that looks pretty sweet.
In the end it's your car & do what you want. The flag could be good practice for paint.

Do the hood mirrors like the wagon! Awesome.

It is definitely a beater. I can see through the floor in like two places, it has a piston I took a dremel to, and the interior is mostly held together with wood screws. But it's also my daily driver.

I have thought about it and if it weren't difficult to cover up where the old ones are and fender mirrors were actually useful I would.

Then get the sides wrapped in wood vinyl.

Haha its okay I really do like the idea hope you follow through (I'm part Swedish so I'm a little biased)

We'll see. I think I need to just get drunk and make the decision or it'll never happen.

Ehh, I think it's kinda poser'ish and I like clean cars. Even if it's patina.

Fair point. I need to come up with something else to do to the front of the car. It's not obnoxious enough.

Sounds just like me 93 Cherokee before I scrapped it. It must have been in a flood because the floor boards were essentially gone. I didn't find that out till I went 4wheeling and water soaked the carpet / pad and made it heavy enough to sag onto the muffler, started smoldering and small fire once air got to it.
Removed the carpet and realized it was toast. I later cut half the roof off and drove it for a few months like that, down the highway in about 3" snow going about 50 mph passing everyone.
Go go it. I personally would remove the hood, but I have short arms and wouldn't be able to reach middle of hood to paint.

Yeah, I've never used fender mirrors but I can see why they'd be less practical.

Get a screaming chicken

Needs more Swede.

No wood, get a vinyl wrap of brickwall pattern.

as a fellow old Volvo owner (1990 760 Turbo), I say nay on the tinted high beams (makes the car look even more dated, and yellow with the silver paint would be... Meh), and yea on the Swedish flag on the hood. Do the roof, too, like IPD.

I feel like there's no getting around the dated look with a mid 80's Volvo... I'm just looking for something to make it look different from the front.

if your state doesn't require high beams, take out the lamps and turn them into cooling holes, Hellcat-style. Then paint/plastidip all the chrome black or something to complement the silver. Maybe paint the grille like the flag, and paint the prancing moose on the hood. Just how different do you want? Go all out. It's your car, make it yours, and own the old decrepitness of it. You're not going to lower the value, after all. Do something no one else has done. For instance, my Volvo may be the only one with a set of particular emblems on the grille, because I modified factory emblems for the rear of the car (but from a donor vehicle) and glued them to the Turbo "egg crate" grille, which is usually devoid of badging (but the chrome Turbo grilles can have a Turbo script on them). End result, to me, looks like what the factory might have done and had done to other grille styles, but is unique to me, AFAIK. Kinja isn't letting me post pictures or I'd share.

I got a need for Swede.
