I noticed with my last update of my Buick drawing you guys were pretty impressed with my chrome work. So I thought I'd post a step by step. Lets start with explaining the needed materials.....
You will need blending stumps, a black colored pencil, a design knife, .03 and .01 design pens, royal blue and chocolate brown chalk pastels, something to shave the pastels into with the knife, an eraser (I like to use a Black Pearl brand eraser), permanent white gouache (high quality watercolor) in a 60% solution and a very fine tipped paintbrush.
First you start out with the design pens, you really want to define the shape:
(I forgot to take this picture on the passenger side, so thats the drivers side)
Next, you dip the blending stumps in the shaved pastel powder and rub it on the page. The brown is the shadow and the blue is the highlight.
Next you want to lighten the pastel a bit with the eraser and add some black colored pencil around where the pen is.
And last but not least, very carefully put a small amount of gouache where you think sunspots should be. Be sure not to add too many and not make them too large.
And thats how I draw chrome on my drawings.
