I bought my Z when I was working from home and didn't anticipate such a huge commute. Now I work about 35 miles from home and I also go to the gym at work. So just from commuting I'm doing 400 miles a week. 20 MPG, and I usually try and find 0% ethanol gas which comes to about $3.60-3.80 a gallon. You do the math.
Anyways I had my heart set on a Fiesta ST but then I found out you can't fit an infant seat in them and that's gonna be a problem in about 2 years. Z is a ton of fun when I'm in the mood but a lot of times I just want to relax, and with its road noise and stiff ride I can't. Plus as unjalop as this is, I kind of want to take a break from driving stickshift. This is my 6th stick car and I'm kind of over it with this commute. If I feel the need I can always hop on my motorcycle.
So anyways I was thinking about the MKV GTI. Wifey has an MKV Rabbit and it's not bad. Could use a better suspension and brakes and 6th gear is too tall, but other than that I can dig it. Plus with a stage 1 tune it's putting down as much power and a good 80 or so more lb-ft than my Z, albeit through the wrong wheels. But all I want the power for is to pass on 2 lane roads and highway cruising. If I want to feel the road.... motorcycle.
Am I nuts? Is this an unOppo move or what? Im 31 BTW.

Thats what Im asking. I dont really care in any way that will influence my decision, but I'm curious to hear what people thing.
Lot of folks go on and on about driver engagement and all that here but I am finding in the real world that there can be such a thing as too much engagement.

Well I mean we're not talking about a Corvette or a 911 or some special sports car the must be had with a manual, it's just a Golf/Rabbit? It's fine with or without a manual.
I've driven a Mk6 GTI DSG and a MK5 Rabbit manual, they're both very good cars.

Hold on now:
I am finding in the real world that there can be such a thing as too much engagement.
No, the way new cars are now with their easy steering and handling and technology, we couldn't possibly be further from too much engagement.
I've driven a DSG Mk6 GTI and it was and still is a decent trans and car, especially with paddles, the only car with paddles to surpass it that I've driven was an XC60 Type-R AWD.

It's like saying the Miata isn't the answer and it's shit. While I much prefer manual cars now, I hate it when people bash on it for trivial reasons. We're all different people, we all don't like the same things, if he wants a DSG, he'll get one and that doesn't make him lesser of a Jalop or Oppo than anyone else.
So long as you don't get a Prius or Nissan Stanza. :p

Wait you cannot fit a infant seat in a Fiesta? Damn that is a bummer since I can fit one in my Cobra. So much for buying a Fiesta for a DD. Its not unoppo at all.

Sorry for the confusion, she has a 6 A T Rabbit, though it does have pretty obedient (but excruciatingly slow) manual mode. Around town I don't bother but it comes in handy on the freeway in the mountains. I usually set it to 5th, which is about 6th in my Z RPM/MPH wise.

I know, and I agree with that sentiment. I was saying that I thought that that is what he meant, the unJalopness of getting a car with a DCT, especially a front-drive EPAS one after a manual rear-drive sports coupe.

In another life the Stanza was pretty bad ass
But I do feel like a lot of Oppo and def a lot of Jalop is bashing anything that is normal or "unenthusiast", which is funny given the deifying of the most unthusiast ride of all, the poverty spec brown diesel wagon.
Again though, just kind of bored I guess and I want to see what kind of objections folks have to such a move.

not nuts.
also with such a long commute might I recommend something else?
Audi A3 TDI. Its more or less a golf, with more standard features. TDI for that long commute (I dont care what EPA says, we consistant get 55+ MPG in our TDI). and if you REALLY want more power, head over to APR for a tune.
why the audi? The Audis i know 100% for sure there were assembled in germany. some of the golfs of the past where assembled in mexico. I love germans cars. I do NOT want a german car made in mexico.

Don't concern yourself with what a bunch of teenagers consider "unOppo." In spite of what Jalops often think, the transmission does not make or break the car or make you less of a man.
Get the DSG GTI.

I've never driven it so I have no personal experience. I've just read multiple people say that it doesn't seem like it's at the same quality level of other DCTs.
Is it still a 6 speed or did VW upgrade to 7?
titsinmymitts
> Manuél Ferrari
11/26/2014 at 20:50 | 0 |
I haven't driven a ton of DCTs, but I could definitely live with it everyday for sure.
It was a 6 speed. Like with everything, what the reviews or critics say vs the actual experience can differ greatly.

Very true. I have an E90 M3. Reviews always blast it for the "lack of torque". That issue never bothers me.
The most important things are:
1. Do you like it
2. Is it reliable
It would be good to research long term reliability to be safe. Some DCTs have had issues. The DCT in the Ferrari 458 tends to bork itself when the car is tracked often or driven very hard on the street.

I don't really care where a car is made, as long as it's reliable. And in any case the MKVs were all made in Germany from what I understand.
Plus diesel sucks. I'd rather lose ~10 MPG than go diesel. That's too much of a sacrifice for me.

I dont think those exist, and the mileage is the big driver behind me dumping the Z. It will save me ~$1000/yr. This thing pretty much has everything wrong with the Z but nothing good about it. Only plus is the added practicality I guess, but if I can help it I don't ever want to drive something like this.

GTI is a great car, certainly more practical in 4dr trim. The interior will be much better. I too would get the DSG because I sit in a lot of traffic. Besides it's faster 0-60 if you want to justify it.

they do exist.... just maybe not where you are. And how can you not like the LX stationwagons? Oh well, different strokes for different folks. So if you don't like big cushy cruisers, then how about a prius. No joke. They're reliable, good mileage, good safety.

VWs from the past decade have a reputation of falling apart. This isn't based on consumer reports, or direct personal experience, but on the fact one friend has a 2.5 rabbit and its wheel came off with the hub(!). Another friend has a mkv jetta whose accessory belt comes off every time he starts it. These are just some of the stories I hear every so often. I'm not familiar with all VWs from the last few years but I do know from friends that random stuff breaks and it's either stupidly hard to fix yourself or dealers charge an arm and a leg. Again, probably nothing wrong with most of the cars but there are some MYs out there that scare me away from VW in general. I was suggesting things I would buy if I were in your shoes.

My wife, mom, and father in law all had MK6 GTIs last year. All autos. My wife and father in law are both speed demons. Why auto? Because who wants to spill coffee when you're headed into the office. Manuals are great second cars … autos are for Monday through Friday. Anyway - a GTI DSG is as fun as it gets for a commuter. Pull the trigger.

Just head over to VW vortex and there will be a DIY for every common failure. My MK5 TDI is plagued by a drooping head liner, door lock module failure, and washer jet line breaking. I fixed the door lock module by resoldering the connections, and fixed the washer line with some rubber hose. I'm debating if I feel like pulling the head liner out. Most likely I'll give it to a shop.
They aren't Japanese reliable, but they aren't too bad either.
