Should I be able to shift with the engine off and no clutch? I know I have a blown seal and am low on Trans fluid. I dont know enough about manuals to know if this is normal or not.

With no clutch? BRB

Yes. You can go through gears with the engine off and no clutch. As long as you can hear it clicking into gear, everything is A-OK. It's good that you ask about things you don't know about, though. It would've served me well to have done the same in the past.

yeah you can. I usually drop it into second if I've been sitting in my driveway with the car running for a bit and forget to throw it in gear. I'm not sure if your low fluid would let you or not though...

Ya, Im not afraid to look like an idiot in the pursuit of knowledge. I retain most of what I take in, and Im always looking to learn something new. That mindset has helped me alot

At least it does in my Dad's truck.

Yup, normal operation. You can even shift without a clutch when the vehicle is moving!

yeah I'm able to do that with the engine off, looks normal to me

A friend of mine was clutchless shifting it the other day, he didnt like how the 3rd synchro was misaligned, so then he started double clutching

Yes. And when you do it perfectly it's about the best feeling in the world

Oh man do I feel like a big rig driver when I'm cruisin' around in the Dakota dry shifting like a baus

I wouldn't recommend clutchless shifting unless you know what you're doing. A lot of people think they're getting it right when they're actually getting it half right and putting a lot of wear on their synchros.

American truck drivers swear by it, oddly enough. They still use non synchro boxes and are taught to change gear by rev matching rather than double declutching. Fun fact: automated truck boxes do the same.

I won't do it, I don't trust myself enough

As long as you aren't on a hill with brake off.

I was on a hill with the brake on

Oh, yes, certainly. I was talking about ordinary enthusiastic amateurs like us, or a bit less knowledgeable. It's easy to think you're getting it right without realising it's the synchro saving you from grinding gears.

That's what rentals are for :)
