Why do they teach nothing about tires or car maintenance or emergency maneuvers in driver's ed?

All I remember learning about was not drinking and driving, and the basic rules of the road. Also lots of scary crash movies and photos to terrify us from even wanting to drive in the first place. I learned about car control and maintenance and tires because I was interested, but I had to learn it from my parents, friends, and internet not from driver's ed. I got my license having never broken traction even once. Even though they told us some generic "don't panic" type advice, I had zero experience with a slide before getting my license.

Because you're not tested on tires, car maintenance, or emergency maneuvers.

Because its easier to teach sign reading 101 instead of something that is more in depth. Car handling is skills based, maintenance checks require a tiny amount of technical acumen. Maybe they assume these two things are out of the reach of a 16 year old.

We have that in Norway. You have to have a "glattkjøringskurs" (driving on ice/snow), without that it's no licence for you.

The only time I did anything in the drivers ed car that was pushing the car's limits was slamming on the brakes ONCE in a controlled environment and then never doing anything else, to trigger the ABS.

Because the US basically doesn't do driver training.

I was able to take Driver's Ed online, which meant my dad was my teacher and it was entirely on the honor system. So I pretty much just took the test for my license without ever taking a real class. It worked fine for me since I already knew all the laws and stuff, but it's scary to think that there are other people out there able to get their license just like that.....

This might sound a bit funny but I learned everything I can do in a car through simulators and other games. Driver's Ed should possibly include that?

Yeah, I guess what I mean is that the license test should require those things.

I don't disagree. I think the driving test should be much harder than it is currently. It should involve spin recovery, emergency lane change, and some basic knowledge of how a car works like why slamming on the brakes isnt always the best action. The fact that parallel parking is the only skills portion of the test is absurd.
