Literally an hour after reading his check engine light article, I get the first one ever in my current car. Yes I checked the gas cap.

Ooh u jelly.
My dad's car had a CEL over the past month because of a bad O2 sensor.

Kind of like my roommate, bad o2 sensor for two months. Complains about getting 10 mpg, but too much of a hassle to fix it....

I live with a CEL. It's been on for 8 months. Stupid sensors.

The thing preventing me from fixing it is cost. I'm the one doing mechanical work at home, which also means I have to buy the parts, and a new sensor is a rip-off.

How much? Really wish my problem was an o2 sensor.

Mine has been on forever. Emissions control vent circuit malfunction....the solenoid that vents the charcoal canister is stuck open or closed. Like I could give half a shit....

Lincoln LS? V6 or V8? Im gonna guess its either an evap leak/peformance code. Or a P03xx code. Ignition coils like to go out. Maybe a lean code as well. Pcv hoses start to leak or the Maf gets dirty.

V8, guessing egr or those brittle hoses going to it. P0108.

My corolla had one for over 2 years. I knew what the problem was but it didn't affect the car, just made getting emissions done a pain. It was actually a problem with a TSB but whenever I tried getting the dealership to do something they acted dumb.

I think on those it has a dpfe egr deal on it. Egr and MAP intergrated together. They get clogged up with carbon. I dont think theyre very expensive.

Mine is the TSS, so I just use my phone as my speedometer.

Yes you're correct. You can find them for under $100, if new hoses don't fix it.

You can pick up a cheap scanner for what you'll pay a shop to get your codes read.
That said, there's a game I play with my Lada. The wires for the VSS have been pulled out, so it's obviously not sending a message to the computer. The early Lada TBI system only uses the VSS to verify TPS and MAP readings when the engine's been sitting at a constant RPM for ten to fifteen seconds, so this doesn't really affect driveability at all. The game involves seeing how long I can sit at a light pulsing the throttle (to prevent the CEL from coming on when it looks for the VSS and can't find it) before the guy beside me looks over confused as to why the idiot in the Lada wants to drag race. Given that my Lada doesn't even have a radio and only has about six buttons, the game may get old fast, but there's nothing better to do... except stare at the driver beside me until they look or the light changes.

They don't usually charge to read codes around here. I have a scan tool anyway.
TBI, guessing obd1. I'm unfamiliar with Ladas, what do you have?

'96 Niva. It's an adaptation of GM's ALDL. I don't have a scan tool for it, but shorting two of the diagnostic connector pins causes the CEL to blink to indicate the code(s).

Similar to how my 80's Cutlass does it. Sad they stopped offering ways to read codes without a scan tool.

$150-$200, just for a brand new sensor on PelicanParts.

You can buy universal Bosch O2 sensors for around $50. They are very easy to install and they come with directions. I put one on my E30 and it worked great. It's the same sensor, it just has universal wiring.

I checked on other sites, and found Bosch sensors for the same price, $50. The ones pelicanparts has are Denso. those are needlessly expensive.

If they're $50 they're probably the universal connectors. The factory Bosch O2 sensor for my E30 was around $120.

That's what my current CEL is for on my car. Only problem is that it prevents my car from refueling properly. It pumps about 1/2 gallon then stops.

Really? Weird. Mine does that maybe <5% of the time it will just randomly stop pumping. I wonder if it's related. What car do you drive? Mine is a 99 Camry

04 WRX. From what I could gather on some forums, it seems to be related on my vehicle at least.

Haha. I just saw this! If it's any consolation — of the 600 replies on my column, approximately 496 told me to get a code reader and read it myself. So now I pass along that advice to you.
