Kinja'd!!!

A friend sent this to me. Its off her smart phone connected to her 2003 Camry. Other than this message the car seems to run fine. As much as we would all like to see her crush the Camry and buy a Miata, FoST, or WRX, its not in the cards. I'm pushing for a Raptor but yea....she's a social working and commuting is a big part of her job which is why my help has been requesting and now I'm turning to you guys.

Yea catalytic converter dying it looks like. Time to take that sucker out and weld in a straight pipe.

Ah yes, P0420 on a Camry. Catalytic converter may be crapping out. Theres a TSB out for that. It calls for either a ecu reflash with an updated calibration. Or a cleaning procedure they do at the dealer. Or they may replace it under warranty if its covered.

Being a 2003 I'm guessing the Warranty has run out unless the TSB says otherwise. Thats awesome and I'll advise to contact the dealer to see what they can do.

She may get lucky. They usually extend the coverage by a few years and 10 to 20k miles for things like these.

Hey it works and is much cheaper than replacing a catalytic converter that has failed. Also never have to replace again.

found this on a yahoo answer thingy.

"federal requirements demanded that the two most expensive components of the OBD II system, the powertrain control module (PCM) and the catalytic converter, be warranted solely by the original equipment manufacturer to meet federal test procedure (FTP) standards for eight years or 80,000 miles, whichever occurs first"

so if her car doesnt have 80k miles on it and is newer than 06 shes good....if its older..sounds like it, then shes kinda screwed into a new cat. That's okay tho. Girls like cats.

:)

Warranty on emissions control is generally longer than the bumper to bumper. IIRC it must be 10 years minimum on emissions equipment. The 03 may still be outside that, but if there is a TSB for the problem they should go good based on the TSB. You may have to tell them that you are aware of the TSB to get them to cover it though.

Had the same thing on my old 2004 corolla. Dealership always gave me the run around on the TSB issue.

doyouevenshift is most likely right. She can try to go to the dealership to have them flash the ecu with the correct parameters. In 03-04 toyota programmed incorrectly making the emissions parameters too strict causing that code to pop up when it's actually fine. I put over 100k miles on my 04 corolla with that same code. There may have been a slight decrease in fuel economy but otherwise fine. If your friend has to have the car pass emissions yearly she can either go through the hassle I did of clearing the codes and driving around until all but the last module registers (can be tricky but I did it twice) or she can go to the dealer and make them reflash the ecu (depending on he dealer about $100). The dealership I went to always gave me crap about it saying I would have to replace the cat too (I think it was $1700 aka more than the car was worth). They ignored the TSB I mentioned saying the TSB says it has to have the cat replaced. When researching the issue many people on forums said the reflash worked for them. Occasionally it wouldn't.
