Kinja'd!!!

So today I took my 2000 R50 pathfinder in to have work done on a recall that affects the left front strut tower. Long story short Nissan declared my truck a writeoff, and took it away from me. I'm to expect a buyout in the next month or so. They put me in a Mazda2 temporarily because they were out of Nissans... (Right?). I argued with them until they agreed to give me a loaner Titan on Thursday.

Not happy about this. When I'm less angry I'll write a full story about what happened.

I've heard of an insurer calling a car a loss, but a manufacturer? Shouldn't they just fix it?

The recall on the R50 Pathfinder is so severe, Nissan can decide it's not worth repairing, and write your truck off, then buy out whatever the value is. Then you argue with them some more until they give in and just give you enough money to buy another Pathfinder, that's already fixed, register, and insure it.

Canada. But after poking around on the interwebs, it seems as though the same thing is happening south of the border as well. Many people have told me to expect a generous offer so Nissan can still look somewhat good.

I suppose the upside is you get a safer, possibly better vehicle.

I am grateful Nissan stood behind their product 14 years after it was built (18 in some people's cases). I will most likely end up buying another R50 Pathfinder for the short term, until I'm ready for a new Frontier. Am I happy with how they're handling this? No. But at least they're taking some responsibility.

Be happy. BMW sells cars with bad valve timing gear bolts, and bad rod bearings that grenade motors. They don't even do a recall.

I just found out our Wrangler has a recall on it for parking brake failure, after searching the VIN just for shits and giggles. The NHTSA's report reads as such:

VIN: 2J4FY29T8LJ534796

Year: 1990 Make: JEEP Model: WRANGLER (SPORT UTILITY)

Number of Open Recalls: 1

SUMMARY: ON CERTAIN SPORT UTILITY VEHICLES EQUIPPED WITH MANUAL TRANSMISSIONS, THE PARKING BRAKE CAN SELF RELEASE WITHOUT WARNING.

SAFETY RISK: THIS COULD ALLOW THE VEHICLE TO ROLL AWAY, INCREASING THE RISK OF A CRASH

REMEDY: DEALERS WILL INSTALL A PARKING BRAKE ASSEMBLY WITH A STRONGER PAWL RETURN SPRING.

RECALL STATUS: Recall INCOMPLETE

Here's the kicker: the recall was issued in 2002, well before we owned it. The PO just never cared enough to take in for servicing.

I'm sorry for your loss. At least they're being responsible and fixing the issue instead of covering it up or ignoring it like some other manufacturers.
