Here are the bad things I'd want to do with a naturally aspirated Z4 for at least 400hp while retaining lightness and power delivery, and probably reliability to a great extent:

-E36 M3 ITBs

-Flowed head

-Hotter cam

-Higher pressure injectors

-N54 High Pressure Fuel Pump

-Valvetronic full lock

-Active Autowerke N52 headers

-Eisenmann Race exhaust

-10.5lb flywheel

-Heavy duty clutch

-ESS supercharger system

-Heavy duty radiator

-Oil cooler

-Billet oil pump

-Higher boost tune

-Sway bars/chassis braces

-E90 M3 CPP wheels

-Non-runflat track/street tires

-KW V3 adjustable coilovers

-3.91 Quaiffe LSD

Definitely a pipe dream (and a costly one at that) at this point but something that is quite drool-worthy for me. Plus, it would set records and be a great track car with some sort of hard top and roll cage. I do have the opportunity to buy a good E89 cheaply several years down the road and find them to have twice the looks of any of the competition. And I'm not even big on new cars.

I'm not so sure if my dream build for the C4 is to rebuild my forged piston L98 for matching numbers and ~100hp gain with better parts (and keep the 4+3 because it adds character) or do a Vortec 4.8 with breathing mods for revs (or even de-stroke and aluminum 5.3 for weight savings at the sacrifice of cost). I like the idea of maintaining originality, but even then my car's worth $6,000 on a great day.

ok. I'll spec you the cheapest best sbc or ls that hits your hp target, but you have to let me know what echeck legality is required. Your wiring ability/love of your digital dash. Also whether you are looking for 400whp or 12% less crank horsepower. Finally what you deem acceptable idle quality and mpg.

Thanks! For the record, I have 0 technical expertise unless we can count tuneups/changing fluids and filters/easy-to-get-to gaskets. So cost is the main factor at this point, and it wouldn't be so wise to spend any more than I would on a decent junkyard 4.8 next year. I'm doing a clutch/flywheel over winter which puts a dent in the budget. It's registered as an antique so no legality issue, and idle quality doesn't matter. My 135k cammed engine delivers something like 13/23, so I'd be looking for something about there or better. I probably won't end up doing a swap in the end, but I'd consider it.

I was a '94 lt1 owner. The main issue is taking the engine apart to do a destroker is a couple thousand by itself. So junkyard 5.3 or ls1 aluminum block is the answer because a simple cam swap puts you at 400whp. About as plug and play as it gets. To play satans advocate, for a 400whp l98 already in the verge of detonation, you might find a low boost blower setup, but by the time you do cam, springs, injectors etc. on a tired motor; I wish you good luck finding a guy who can dynotune the ecu properly with boost. Dave Emanuel did an excellent article in Corvette Fever detailing the swap. If you cant find the srticle, i'll find it for you.
