I need a trans rebuild. The underside of the truck smells like a porta potty. Gonna be 600 to fix. That's my whole budget. Well, there goes my cushion. Let's hope nothing else goes wrong. She's still shifting fine, but she's not happy about it

Nope 5 speed

Have you eliminated every other possible fault (clutch, shifter linkages etc). Is it not possible the leak is something else and it just wont go into gear due to out of adjustment linkages or something.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:32 |

How do you figure? What does the fluid look like?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:33 |
|
So, what happened? Pretty big jump from "there's a smell" to "gotta rebuild"
Was there a problem with the clutch installation that caused another issue? What part(s) have failed?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:34 |

5 speed auto?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:35 |

Is that why I hear a lot of 90s/early-mid 2000s Fords with very whiny transmissions?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:35 |

I think the main shaft is bent
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:36 |

That's the power steering pumps.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:36 |

Shoulda got an S10 bro. /kidding
Could be a lot worse, you could need a new motor.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:36 |

Can I call you?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:37 |

Sure thing
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:38 |
|
The main shaft could be bent. Needing a new engine isn't too far off
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:38 |
|
Ah. All I know is if I hear a particular whine I know I can look around a find a Taurus or Windstar or something.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:38 |

Some say if you're downwind of an Explorer you can smell the balljoints being worn out.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:39 |
|
Wouldn't that cause some pretty serious vibration?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:40 |
|
Then I return to my first point.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:55 |

I'd find it a bit shocking to bend that particular piece- especially with a '98 Ranger. No offense.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 17:57 |
|
Should've got a Dodge.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:05 |

Same here. I've never heard of an input shaft bending from anyone I know and only ever read of a few going on high performance cars such as drag racers.

Good! I'll bring the pizza! We should get this done between about 3 of us over the weekend
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:17 |

Can you just buy a new engine/trans combo and install that?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:21 |
|
Your brother probably had a little too much fun with it yesterday.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:27 |

Hate to say it, but those are just benefits of owning older cars. You should probably bring it somewhere (If you haven't already) to be looked at before you jump to conclusions though.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:28 |

You comin to denver? If so, Hell ya! I'll bring the cookies
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:28 |

possibly, but from what it looks like this was just waiting to happen
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:29 |

maybe, but I'd like to avoid it

Nibbles is coming by on sunday to take a look and maybe work on it with me. I trust him.

NIBBLES, That probably sounds like a good idea.
I trust pretty much all Opponauts who I've heard of, Haha.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:32 |

Ya, that scenario wasnt my thought. But it does explain everything, except the vibration is pretty low. I think its only vibrating a little becuase the engine is idling a little high
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:34 |
|
Lets just hope he doesnt eat my truck, lol. No I trust him in particular because of how nice he keeps his dodge running
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:36 |

Haha, It's always nice to have contacts who can help with automotive related fuckups.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:39 |

Sb62 doesnt trust him though, He only trusts certified shops. But with older cars I find that ideology unrealistic and impractical. BTW, thats SB closing my hood in the above pic
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:42 |

I dont think its a mortal wound (yet), but still a possibility.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:50 |

You shut your mouth
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:53 |

Wat? Pls dnt eat me.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:53 |

Thanks for reminding me! I should probably show up in the Doge instead of the cherry S40; that should assist with the mechanic cred
![]() 11/25/2014 at 18:54 |

I trust people whom I trust, and certified shops.
Like I know a few ASE M. Tech's. I trust them with whatever. Then I've got some buddies who aren't certified but are pretty experienced with what they are doing.

Yes you should. Also bring as many tools as you can, I only have a few mismatched crescent wrenches, a mismatched ratchet set thats probably older than me and a couple screw drivers. I need to buy some tools eventually
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:18 |

Buy wrecked foxbody with 302/T5. Swap. Profit?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:21 |
|
Thats actually not a bad Idea for down the road if/when I decide to do mods. This thing actually runs, its just not very happy about it, I need to get inside the trans.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:24 |
|
A full trans rebuild is way more than 600 dollars... just get a junkyard trans.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:25 |
|
I dont think it needs a full rebuild, but partial? probably
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:27 |

#Rangerlife! You're having issues with your transmission, and I'm slowly losing reverse in mine. It's a conspiracy I tell ya! Too bad CO and Denver is so far apart, we could conquer both in one day. Remember the Ranger meet I mentioned? It would be more like a VW meet, we'd just spend all day fixing broken stuff.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:28 |
|
You can get a used T5 for less than 400, I'm pretty sure that would bolt up and be stronger.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:28 |
|
My reverse gear is weird, it works but is difficult to get into. I may slowly be losing it too. Eh, what are ya gonna do
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:30 |
|
Mine's an Auto, so if my truck gets pissy and doesn't want to go into gear there's really nothing I can do. And it's surprising how little I achieve by cussing it out every time.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:37 |
|
I name everything I buy from computers to cars, so that way when they piss me off I can yell at them by name. Once I was working on my iMac G3 named Freddy and I cut myself on the board. I Screamed "FREDDY BIT ME!!". I confused the hell out of my mom, it was hilarious
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:38 |

I see your Ranger is Veronica, mine's Blue! I was really creative when I named her.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 19:41 |

That sucks man, and that cushion was great forward thinking. I hope it gets resolved, its a nice Ranger
![]() 11/25/2014 at 20:51 |

i just found out i have cousins there lol. A trans on a Ranger is 1,000,000% basic automotive. If you encounter any issue, ask Siri.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 20:58 |
|
Do one thing and at least call some used auto parts places / junkyards. Some places have them pulled already. I did that for my 93xj and held up till I scrapped it. I also used a junkyard trans for the metro & it's held up for about 2 years, although showing signs of 1-2 syncro going out. Call and see how much one costs. About $250 which is about 1/3 your budget. If nothing else you get information on the cost.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 21:05 |

I think I'm just gonna do a partial rebuild with nibbles
![]() 11/25/2014 at 21:08 |

mr manuel would like to have a word with you
its a 5 spd manual
![]() 11/25/2014 at 22:39 |
|
What do you mean by shifting fine but doesnt like it? Do you smell anything weird when driving it?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:02 |
|
It takes some convincing to shift but it does fine in gear. It smells like burning tranny fluid when driving
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:03 |
|
any grinding when shifting?
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:13 |
|
Yes but not every time in every gear. It's indiscriminate.
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:17 |
|
Sounds like the syncros are starting to go. But if you can get a full rebuild on a tranny for 600 id do it. Thats pretty cheap
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:18 |
|
I agree it's cheap. But I would like to avoid spending even that much if I can
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:23 |
|
Any leaks? I would change fluid and see if that helps at all. Maybe see if you can adjust the clutch as well. Also check to make sure there is clutch fluid if its a hydraulic clutch. If its a cable one the cable might be stretched from age and need to be replaced
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:26 |
|
Clutch was replaced in September. There is quite a large slow tranny leak
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:33 |
|
Have you checked fluid lately? Thats why your smelling it b/c of the leak. Its burning off when you drive the truck
![]() 11/25/2014 at 23:52 |
|
I'm dropping the tranny on Sunday with nibbles. I'll replace the fluid then

Our former delivery truck was a similar vintage B3000 with the 5-speed auto that took a shit and had to be replaced. Spent $2500 to get it done and my driver totaled it a few months later. Yay.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 15:19 |

Yeah, I have the ford 5 spd auto in my 2000 mercury mountaineer, its extremely lathargic, it won't downshift or upshift, my moms 2005 escape has a 4 spd auto, and it is SO much better.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 15:21 |
|
When the CEL popped on with the code 5th gear wrong size we knew we were in trouble. That, plus all the slipping.
![]() 11/26/2014 at 15:27 |
|
mine seems to run okay, its just extremely lethargic. (though let me tell you, the suspension is so much softer than in my moms escape which is wonderful plus road noise is far far less in mountaineer).
