I was playing on GTA racing the other day and started getting friend requests from someone. They sent many sexually suggestive things and aggressively requested I add them. They thought I was female...

I am not. I can kinda see why they thought that since I play as a female character and have ellie from the last of us as my avatar.

If I was a girl however some of these messages would be rather upsetting. This seems to go on all the time. This is why we can't have nice things/ more female gamers.

I get this sometimes online as well, but mostly on forums.. Honest mistakes most of the time.

However, people acting like assholes towards women online because they think they're anonymous are pretty shitty. Fuck those people.

More anecdotes.

I was playing Forza 5 a while back and a girl came on the mic (you can where this is going) anyway after 3 minutes which were probably the most disappointed I have been in humanity in years the race began. Now normally I assume they would ram her of the road and start shit again but this was a no collision race and to put it short she destroyed everyone. Man I laughed hard. Karma is a bitch and she is awesome at racing. Anyway then it got weird as white knights started appearing out of no where and then it just got creepy with people asking for names, locations and hair colour? I bailed because I didn't have any good B class cars but man I wish I knew what happened next also being a girl gamer online is tough.

Yeah it's pretty unpleasant most of the time online. GT6 is absolutely terrible for it as women are relatively rare on there so when one does join a room they get hounded by unpleasant horny weirdos.

I just don't talk anymore unless it is teamwork against the computer. I remember back at the start of the 360 when everyone was nice and polite on PGR3 then COD became a thing and being a dick became the norm. I'm sure putting a mic set in every box was a brilliant marketing strategy from Microsoft's view but I wonder if they would still do it knowing the monster they would create.

Whenever I play with my female character, people will constantly follow me around in their chrome Adders, just honking until I get in. Then they take me to their garage and just stand there, assuming I'm impressed by all of their chrome supercars with dollar sign wheels.

Part of it is the anonymity of the Internet. You see the private wretched side of people rather than their more socially acceptable in-face persona. Usually I just turn the headset off or ignore messages. Not like I'll meet those asses again.

I only have one as well. I spend an unreasonable amount of time in the clothing stores, so it's a fair mixture of people trying to hit on me and people riding motorcycles through the door in order to be able to use weapons and kill me just because that's apparently fun.

During my early days playing FFXI (MMORPG), I met a Mithra character in my server. FYI, Mithras are the cat girls in the game, and there are no playable male mithra character models. This character was pretty cool, inviting me in their linkshell (guild), and generally was a chill person.

One day, this player sent me a private message, and judging from the wordings used, was upset and disturbed. Apparently, random players were asking this player for private information (real name, hair color, location, age, etc), even going so far as sending gifts of in-game money and items.

This player is actually a dude. And I know he was upset, but the best I came up with that time was reassuring him that, at least, he's never going broke in the game.

Moral of the story: creepy people abound everywhere, especially online.

I tend only to use my Mic for in-game team work. One of the beauties of PC gaming is once you find a good couple servers they crack down on this shit. Match-making is for the birds and consoles.

Indeed. These days I get a different type of trolling goin' on. I get a lot of requests when I'm playing my female Awoken hunter in Destiny. Since voice messages are no longer "a thing" on XBone, I lead them along for a few, get them into a game or party chat and, when they ask for my deets I put on my BIG MAN voice and say "32, Male, Denver. How about you honey?"

Nobody has stayed around for long after that

My favourite way to upset them is to declare that they cheated whenever they beat me in a match, then stubbornly refuse to accept any argument otherwise or a rematch. This upsets some people a lot.
