See you on I-5, old girl.
This photo was shot the day I bought it four years ago. The person holding the camera is now my wife.

People say Toyota's reliability makes them boring and soulless. I think the opposite. It's that toughness that gives them character. They're like driving Ali in the Rumble in the Jungle.

Older Toyota's aren't nearly as boring as new ones though. But being able to bash mine without a care in the world is always fun.

some of Toyota's commercial vehicles are all right but their recent passenger car stuff is just whitewoods on wheels

I had a Tercel 5-door that was basically indestructible. It didn't always run well, but it always ran. Easy to work on, lots of room to haul stuff, and it had its own sort of character.
I miss that car.

It's true! I had an OLD, beat up, slightly rotten, smelly, and noisy Toyota. Maybe when it was new it had no character, but as it aged it got so much character! It was slow, bad at turning, bad at being comfortable, bad at everything EXCEPT being a car that moves when you tell it to.
Everyone loved that $400 tin box. All of things it lacked gave it so much character. I miss that car.

You must be lying! It must have always run well. You could dump beer in it instead of the oil and it would still run for another 400,000 km! before needing another $5 spark plug.
Those were/are great cars !

I've been wanting one since I say one on craigslist a year ago, how much did you sell it for? and out of curiosity what did you replace it with?

$1200 (has it's quirks but mechanically solid), replaced it with an '80 SR5 longbed.

Yep. Toyota proved that you can build an indestructible vehicle and still make sales. More than a few times on these hallowed pages, I have mentioned my 98 4WD Taco (SR5, extended cab, of course). I do have random thoughts of selling or trading (maybe work in a package deal with the Volvo and get One Vehicle That Does Everything) but then, I...just...can't...If nothing else, I like not having a car payment (and the 'vo gets better mileage for commuting). I just sank $1600 into the Taco (it needed new tires, half shaft and wheel bearing) and I'm probably looking at replacing the cat converter next year (barely passed smog two years ago) but when I consider what I get in return, it's money well spent.

Yeah - I like how to some folks, reliability is a bad thing...Character is great, but one tends to feel differently when one is waiting for a flatbed to come get them....
