Enjoy this. Hearing the turbo spool up and the engine motor on. Black exhaust smoke of violent on boost rich condition. The early part shows Piquet getting on it and showing us just how immense all of these guys balls are. The squalling of the tires in the corner is revealing. Real gear levers and clutches and they had to blip it all on their own. Going straight when the car never was pointed that way.

I wish there was a formula racing series today where they had 800+ HP without downforce.

Kurt Busch was allowed to test without a restrictor plate at Daytona a short while back. He used all of the track to get around...all of it reaching deep into the 220's at times. I started up the Rfactor simulator and changed engine data files on similar NASCAR vehicles to unrestricted ones and it was insane trying not to hit anything and fry the tires.

Agreed, we all know that they would be capable of such speeds, but just too dangerous. Even then, don't stock cars have considerable downforce? I don't know much about NASCAR aerodynamics in the modern era.

But I'm thinking more along the lines of road courses, or like how Indycar/CART/IRL used to be back before it got standardized. Nascar, even with the restrictor plate removed, is still relatively safe compared to the early turbo open wheeled cars.

He blew a tire. That was all it took to put air underneath and make it take off in to the fence. 1987. This was one of the first events that made restrictor plates a concept in thought. This is good history here i haven't seen this video in a long time.

Now, the CART series had much less down-force than today. they had much more power too but there were still problems. Mainly the tracks couldn't handle the speed, just like this event showed. They added pop-up spoiler flaps and spoiler strips along the roof. they did quite a bit of research to keep these things on the ground, much like the ACO did to the LeMans prototype cars.
