You have a 40k budget
You want a RWD performance car
Preferably American, preferably NA V8, no less than 6cyl. Fuel economy is not a concern.
If new, you have a very nice discount through GM and an OK one through Ford
If used, still reliable enough for non-winter DDing, and with reasonable maintenance costs. But the cooler it is, the older it can be.
Must be available with a manual
Preferably available in a bright blue or yellow, will settle for looking really good in black, maybe white. No red, green, or silver.
Go!

The only car that matches your description is the C6 Corvette.

I'm pretty sure these are less than $40k now. RWD and is not less than 6 cyl, manual, blue and with any extra $ I'd get the world's best snow tires.

Used is allowed?
Can you get a C6 Z06 for $40k? I think you can get a C6Z for $40k. Get a C6Z. Oh, and they look downright sinister in black
Or save some money and get a base C6 with the LS3 and Z51 package. Then use the rest of the money to fund tires and such.
If I had to go new for $40k I'd wait for the 2016 Camaro. Not a fan of the Mustang. Maybe a Charger? Eh.

Hmm. first thought is the Challenger SRT. not the hell cat. but then you will always wonder: if if I did get the hellcat?
what Gm;s muscle car..the 'maro...think you could swing a ZL1 with your discount? or maybe a lightly used ZL1?

Wildcard: E92 M3 w/CPO or Carmax warranty.
You can find them all day for under 40k.
Manual or DCT
It comes in dark blue.

GTO, CTS-V, C5 Z06, C6, Terminator Cobra, Maybe a GT500, BMW M3, G8 GXP
OR
Buick Grand National. For 40k you could get a silly good one and it will only appreciate in value.
OR
Any old muscle car with an LSX/Coyote/New Hemi/T-56 swap.

I disregard the NA part of your list and say used Shelby GT500, new Challenger R/T Scat Pack or SVT Terminator as a budget solution.

C5 Z06 seems to always be the logical answer in this situation. But since I know you like offroading...
also if you want to go around corners with a Mustang

There are three excellent options. Not the oldest but all are great choices in their own right. It would be hard for me to pick something over the Boss.

I agree with this fine gentleman on the Mustang. I am partial to the Laguna Seca trim level myself. Not very practical, but who cares?

GMC Syclone or Typhoon.

I think I might be able to find one of these with a little higher milage. Maybe.
But realisticly, In sure I can find one of these really nice for 40.

Well, there's the Mustang, the Camaro, the Challenger, the Charger, the SS and if used, the Corvette and the GTO. It's not exactly a super diverse market.

so, used corvette, mustang, or Camaro. Wildcard: Get a Used Sky redline and give it more power. I wouldn't go with a Camaro, just because meh. I am thinking you are more of a muscle car person than me though, so the Sky is probably out. What are your tastes? What is an example of a cool old car?
*edit* just realized the question was what would I buy... Probably a C6, or if the budget was tighter, a Sky Redline and some parts. Parts bin cars FTW.

I saw a black one with red trim bits. I felt like it was a bit too flashy like F&F style. The orange, even though its bright might not be as bad. I just thought the red wheels and grill were too much.

Yeah, it looks like you need $45K or so to get in a Laguna Seca. But the standard 302s are totally doable at $40k, looks like $35k would get it done.

Sort of out there but Acura was started in america so NSX. The most reliable super car and can still out preform most cars with its v6. I would take this over a used Corvette any day and im a GM fan

Not GM or Ford, but all the good answers have been taken.
485hp, the good updated interior and a warranty.
I would either go that route or a barely used Z435i.

I'm quite cross that the SS wasnt re-skinned in the current impala clothing. If it was, i would buy that car tomorrow. Impala looks great, but is a W-body POS. The SS drives great but looks uglier than two headed pig stuck in the Slim Jim grinder.

Don't worry, I'll be keeping the Jeep alive as long as I can for winter driving and offroading :) Though the Raptor and Boss are tempting.

50 odd more horsepower, better handling, and a 7.0 liter engine are hard to argue with. But then again you don't see the Boss name plate every day and it looks better than the Z06 imo.

Camaro because just knowing there's an option for an ecoboost in the mustang has ruined all 2015 and newer Mustangs.
Long Live the V8!
And I think the 2015 SS is more than $40k.

No way jose. Also, you don't really see Z06's everyday, but you certainly see Mustangs all the time.

Most have hit my normal recommendations:
If needing a back seat - Boss 302 or spec'd out GT
If not needing a back seat - ZO6 of C6 and C5 lineage (in that order)
If needing not just a back seat, but 4 doors - CTS-V wagon (which you won't find many of and you'll have to settle for the sedan)

Unfortunately I don't like the look of the new Camaro :( and I'm aiming for sooner rather than later because if I'm going to keep pouring money into the Jeep, I'd rather it be for offroad upgrades than worrying about its reliability as a daily driver.

...You've seen the new Camaro already? :o
A new SS would probably be under $40k with the GM discount. Though I have yet to see anything else on the website about the manual and mag-ride options yet.
