from an old school VW guy, and one well versed in the issues of TDI's, I am continually shamed at build and engineering issues that pop up since the mid 90's. Why can they not do stuff right and make money doing so? $6500 in parts I believe for sure on this, why is that okay?

I had hope....its like eating at noodles and company, everytime I do I think "never again, I've learned my lesson" and then I go back. Sigh.

I'm glad to hear it's covered. I'd really like to know how they arrived at that parts cost; I've done these, and they don't cost nearly that much.

I think it was Demuro that called out that giant farce that is "German Engineering" and it was one hell of a great marketing trick.

They didn't tell me that number, I've seen it on VW blogs from others. There was a VW tech on the other post that mentioned that doing this job is about $11,000 in billable work though.

I agree. Longtime VW guy here as well. It is troubling to see how quality has gone down. But you saw this stuff coming with the MkIV models, which I love...but you can see engineering issues in the cars that make you go, "huh?" Like the turbo on the MKIV being right above the LH inner CV joint. You see they tried to address it by putting a heatshield in but still. VW should know better. You KNOW they had trouble with the heat affecting wear on the inner CV.

German engineering is a thing alright: Complicate and add difficulty.

I have seen it since the introduction of the III, though there were some good years in the 3 run. My 98 GLX Jetta was straight horrid. Right off warranty at 51K miles, a/c was dead, and the windows had a mind of their own. Rain = roll down and open sunroof - Dry weather = close every window tight. Great driving car, 5 speed, bose, black on black leather, but a piece of junk in every way it could be.

Yeah, for sure. On one hand I appreciate all the electronic data logging on my MkIV, there is just TOO much. It leaves too many places to things to go wrong.

With it being covered are you going to hang on to it longer or still move to something else?

Funny what we'll endure for a car we love.
