My wife's 2011 VS sportwagen TDI stalled and wouldn't restart last night, leaving her stranded. Just talked to the dealer this morning: HPFP failure. A common problem for these TDI's, the High Pressure Fuel Pump basically goes...

Kinja'd!!!

...and takes the entire fuel system with it. Seriously....100% of the fuel system, rail, injectors, low pressure pump, etc, etc. Its about $6500 in PARTS. Fortunately because this is a common problem and I'm still in powertrain warranty the tech assures me that the approval rate for this is 99% and it should be up and running this week.

So.....What car should I replace the Sportwagen with? Wagon, manual preferred, ~$17,000-20,000 budget and highly reliable a plus.

Good luck. There aren't any other than VWs, which as we all know, break in expensive and confusing ways. Maybe you can find a used TLX?

It blows my mind how bad the new engines are, my little 1.6 eco diesel went 312000 miles with nothing but a water pump, timing belt and belt changes (oil and coolant too, but that is assumed). When I sold it, it was still running like clockwork.

VW had a recall out for it a while ago... and "fixed" it by saying that it was because people were putting gas in the diesel tank...

I'm sorry, I can't help you :(

I'd go with a used 3er wagon. It's highly reliable....compared to a VW which tends to commit seppuku when it goes wrong.

I called the tech this morning to make sure he understood before the fact that we had NOT misfueled. ever. Only tier 1 suppliers, only diesel, never bio. Took that bullet out of the clip before they even thought about using it.

Former VW Service Advisor here:

Customer: "I just accidentally put gas in my 2010 TDI. Does my warranty cover that?"
Me: "No, but I'll bet your insurance company will."
Customer: "What?"
Me: "Yep. You're looking around $11k in parts and labor."

fortunately, thats the cheap fix. its the other way around thats expensive. I don't know how they did it but they have a special interlock now on the filler that wont let you insert a gas nozzle.

does your car ever surge a little? Ours did, and in retrospect Im thinking it was probably a sign of things to come. Just make sure if it doesn't happen by 5 years or 60,000 miles you get extended coverage. ~$2000 is a small price to pay compared to $6500-$11,000

Kinja'd!!! TotallyThatStupid > HammerheadFistpunch
11/18/2014 at 12:54

Kinja'd!!!0

Indeed, putting gas in your new VW diesel is catastrophic, the equivalent of having the HPFP grenade.

Diesel fuel is an oil. It keeps things like the pump and injectors lubricated as it moves through the system. Gasoline is a solvent. It cleans all that nasty oil out of the system on its way through.

Kinja'd!!! Sportwägen, Driver Of The Red Sportwagen > HammerheadFistpunch
11/18/2014 at 12:54

Kinja'd!!!0

...surge? Like you hit the gas, it hesitates, and then bucks a little?

And no, I can't get the extended coverage... the car has a hair under 80k miles :(

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > Sportwägen, Driver Of The Red Sportwagen
11/18/2014 at 12:56

mine would surge at lights, bouncing up and down a few hundred rpm and run a little rough some days.

Kinja'd!!! HammerheadFistpunch > TotallyThatStupid
11/18/2014 at 12:57

Kinja'd!!!0

Though Low Sulfur fuel is much less oil and lube than it used to be...part of the HPFP failure problem methinks.

11/18/2014 at 12:58

Kinja'd!!!0

Hmm, I'm not sure if that has happened to me before (though it is a distinct possibility)...

but hey, if they need to pull the engine to fix it, I could ask them to leave it out when I get the car back so I could do the DPF *fix* and EGR *fix* along with the CR170 Euro Turbo upgrade ;)

$6500 in parts? WTF? I just looked them up, and at full list for both pumps, filter, all injectors, rail with regulator, and pressure sensor you'd be at $3,291.25. Still expensive, but half what you were quoted.

Is the surging an indication of the HPFP failing? What would it cost to replace that before it grenades and takes everything with it?
