Pulled up beside a Talbot Sunbeam Lotus at a set of lights. Me and the driver (chap in his mid 30s, kids in the back) looked at each other and grinned. As soon as the lights went green we nailed it to the start of the next roundabout, wheels spinning, engines roaring, kids and girlfriend screaming, face-splitting grins in place :) we never got out of first gear, but it was brilliant :)

So, how quick is a Sunbeam Lotus thirty odd years on?

Quicker than a 4.0l Jag XJ40 22 years on I can definitely say :)

Thats cool, love it when that happens. My best one was me in a 56 beetle(not stock) and a guy in a 60's mini wagon with cooper mechanicals! We raced for about 15mins at night on a long country road swapping the lead a few times before pulling over and checking out each other's rides, feels like yesterday but it was 20 years ago, I know it was dangerous and given the same scenario now I'd....bloody do it again. Now I need that beetle back! Sniff

It's a great feeling. I had the same thing happen a couple of times in my SD1, and more recently in my 850R and Scirocco. Got left in the dust every time, but I couldn't care less.

At the same time, it's rather embarrassing how those 'performance' cars are no match for modern vehicles. The 850R struggles to keep up with my wife's newish Golf on a 0-60 run (although it does at least come ahead in in-gear acceleration and cornering), and the SD1 would easily get left behind by its '80s hot-hatch contemporaries, let alone today's crop. Still, for moments like that, it doesn't matter in the slightest who is fastest – if you come out of it grinning, you've won.
