Out of every modern-ish engine I've ever seen, Subaru boxers look the easiest to work on.

tose motors are impossible to do work on because of Flat layout. sure it makes it a bit easier to pull it out, but any work with the motor in the car is hampered by the wheel archs. change spark plugs? gashed hands and lots of swearing
compression check? forget it

I'm impressed you were able to get it back together with nothing but 1/2" drive impact sockets.

From my experience, the engine bay layout of the NA Subis makes them fairly easy to work on. Once you drain and remove the radiator the whole front of the engine is easily accessible and the plugs are some of the most easily accessible I've changed. About the only thing that sucks is having to pull the motor to change a head gasket.

BTW, I've about everything short of a full rebuild on a Subi engine.

I hope you're dropping in a JDM 22B engine

The Phase II 2.5L engine in my '98 Legacy is difficult to change plugs in due to how close the valve covers are to the frame rails, but the factory plugs are double platinums that have the same replacement interval as the timing belt.

Kinja'd!!!

I broke the clutch fork on my Legacy two weeks ago, and a week ago Saturday, I pulled the engine out, replaced the clutch fork, and had the car back on the road by nightfall. Not bad at all for a modern car.

I have a feeling it's due to the DOHC of the Legacy instead of my SOHC 99 Forester (a fact that hadn't occurred to me till just now). The only thing that made plugs "difficult" in the Forester was the removal of the washer tank (both screws).

Those two things aren't things you often have to do on a car, and they aren't that hard to do even

I see the 3/8 drive, extension, and the two screwdrivers but those impact sockets caught my eye.

What in the world did you need to break free that you needed those for?

Kinja'd!!! NaturallyAspirated > Destructive Tester

I agree, from what I've seen, the DOHC is a lot bigger than the SOHC. I think that whenever the wheels finally fall off my Legacy (it's a 1998 with 225,000 miles and still running strong) I'll upgrade to a Forester.

As I recall the DOHC heads are 1-2" taller per head so that added 2-4" of engine width makes quite a difference in clearance. I could see where that coupled with the further recessed plugs could definitely suck.

Overall the Forrester has been a pretty good car, the head work/ engine swap was due to an unfortunate series of events (ALWAYS change your water pump with your timing belt, bad things can happen otherwise. Then you can have the added bonus of stripping-out a head bolt hole... Good times right there).

Crank pulley, and some stuff was on a lot harder than expected. It's also super easy to just use the impact wrench (electric) to remove bolts instead of turning and turning and turning with wrenches and ratchets. I was just using those sockets because they're convenient.
