Viggen. The interior might be a touch bigger than that of the Quattro, less driveshafts to worry about, and it's only available in stick. Besides, the seats in the Viggen are supremely comfortable, and all came equipped with ISOFIX LATCH points.

id do the viggen. @ 120k miles, that audi is going to start costing some big$
the 2.3T in the viggen on the other hand.....those motors were BRUTALLY over built for their output and will last for EVER.
plus you can always buy another 2002 Audi wagon...viggens are hard to find for a decent price and its not getting any better

Avant. The non turbo V6 is pretty good on the reliability front. Yes the Audi will cost more than a similar vintage impala or taurus to maintain but it isn't too bad. The viggen? HOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO BOOOOOOOOOOOOOOYYYYYYYYYYYYYYY.
Since you mentioned your family in this equation I will just say this - if you needed to depend on this car in the event of a family emergency to take your child somewhere, I would avoid the viggen. Multiple people I know who own high performance saabs either sold them because they tried to daily them or accepted that they were weekend cars that needed to be repaired during the week.

^Agreed. Friends Saab always had something broken. Thing was a money pit.

Neither. But of those two I would choose the Viggen. I've seen nothing but pain and heartache come from those Audi's. I have a friend who has the exact same one as you've mentioned, less miles, as well as a Land Rover Discovery2. The Disco is his reliable ride. Engine troubles left and right in the Audi. Head gaskets a while back, now it might have a cracked block or head because it is burning coolant again, badly enough to misfire. And an Audi master tech went through the whole engine about a year ago. But then again, I wouldn't expect a great amount of reliability out of the Saab either, and parts are getting very difficult to find. I have another friend who used to have a '00ish 9-3, brake booster failed and the ONLY option was to get a used one.

I've always heard the 2.8 and 3.2 were fine, but the 3.0 was shite.

The 3.0 wasn't installed in many cars as an NA motor. But you might recognize the block as the basis for the supercharged 3.0. I think the 3.0 was also based on the 2.8 block, it just had a better top end. Neither the 3.0 or 3.2 have a good reputation among tuners though because of their limited aftermarket and poor gains but left stock, all three are pretty reliable and smooth. But avoid the 2.7 Biturbo like an ebola victim on bath salts!

Go for the Audi, Most Saabs of that era are either sludge pits or money pits. Also parts availability for the Audi will be much more available.

The 2.7t is a fine motor. With a fine aftermarket. Just with lousy parts like plastic/rubber F-hoses at weird angles. Working on it in the S4 or an Allroad was an exercise in cramped dynamics. And also difficult to get to the accessories. Not enough cooling to K03 turbos, oil lines clogged. But, if you replace all those things it's pretty reliable :)

Oh the biturbo has aftermarket, but that doesn't fix the problem of it being a timebomb. I was just saying that's why most tuners get the 2.0T A4/A5 over the 3.2 V6 - no aftermarket. Same with the 3.0 V6 cars. Great when left stock. Don't expect to tune. easily.
