Wait.... TPMS and a yaw sensor... in a 1990 Chevy???? I knew it was advanced in the under-hood department, but DAYUM.

Not one want. Not even one. As much as you'll hate me fore this, I REALLY prefer the 91+ nose. And I think the prices they hold are ridiculous.

Looks pretty nice! The seats do look a little bit overly worn though for a car with not that many miles.

Not even one?!? Come on, man. Nah, while I love the 91-96, the angular shape of the 84-90 is just too glorious. If I could afford a ZR1, this car would be my exact choice. The prices are a little crazy, but that's only because this one is so well preserved. I've seen ones that are sub $15k.

Hell yeah! Good point, though. Makes me wonder. Though, even with that little miles, they are still 24 year old seats.

Probably fat people or something. But fat people can't even fit in a C4 anyways. I'M CONFUSED.

I don't blame you, they're kick ass. The LT1 is great. If you got $10k, I would consider looking for a '96 with the LT4/6-Speed combo.

Its kinda hit and miss, I guess. The '86 has held up pretty decently, but it definitely shows its age. Especially on the driver's side left seat bolsters.

Not true! I'm a fat tub o' goo, 6 foot and about 300lbs, and I fit quite nicely into an '84 Vette I used to have. That does not, however, mean I was able to get out of it with any measure of grace. Unless the top was off, that made it easier.

as legendary as the lt5 is, I'd rather have a c5 z06, which is pretty much superior in every way with that transaxle and 400 lbs weight advantage. I seriously entertain the idea of selling my mustang and trading "up" to one of them almost weekly

Damn, I love the C5Z. Though, believe it or not, I'd still take the LT5. There's just something special about it that the C5Z somewhat lacks, in my opinion. In terms on handling, compared to every C5 except the ZO6, the C4 stomped it. Even the non-Z51s. Engineers at GM were so frustrated when they saw C4s beating their new C5s at AutoX and on the track. One of the prime motivators of making the C6 was so it could be faster than C4s, believe it or not. Compared to a C5Z, though, it would be a close call. In terms of acceleration, though, the C5Z would probably take it.

Coming from a huge GM fanboy, I'd trade the 'Stang in a heartbeat. But you probably love it dearly, and I cannot hate on that.

Bet a ported lt5 revving to 7k sounds beastrous.

So how were those zr1's so fast? C5s had transaxles and lighter pushrod ls's? Was it a matter of tires and suspension?

Kinja'd!!! Tuned-Port-Injected-Rage > 1337HPMustang
11/15/2014 at 22:25

Kinja'd!!!0

Oh god, yes it would.

In terms of speed, they were nearly similar. A 1990 ZR1 could do the sprint to 60 in 4.4 secs, while a 2001 C5Z did it in 4.5. The ZR1 had a fantastic powerband, thanks to a Lotus-designed air management system. So, the LT5 had tons of low-end torque, like all 'Vettes, but the HP peak was really high in the rev-range. As you know, the C5Z rised to 405 HP later on, but so did the ZR1 in '93. So, we'll call them nearly equal in that segment. In terms of handling, I'd hand it to the C5Z. It pulled 1.03 g's on the skidpad and, while I can't find numbers for the ZR1, this is almost undoubtedly better. Even though the ZR1 had an extremely well-sorted suspension (again, thanks to Lotus), that transaxle does wonders. The ZR1 had a much better center of gravity, but that simply cannot make up for it.

All around, the C5Z is the better car. Easily. I just have a huge crush on C4 ZR1s.

Kinja'd!!!0

Could you imagine an lt5 with a transaxle? I've always wondered what an awesome corvette could have been if they had kept that engine into the next generation, although the ls6 is no slouch by any means.

Also how did the zr1 have a better center of gravity? Wouldn't having those ohc detract from a low center of gravity?

Kinja'd!!!1

As somebody with two C4s, one with black seats in fantastic shape, the black seats don't photograph well, at all. You need a professional setup to make even brand new ones look good.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > 1337HPMustang
11/15/2014 at 22:57

Kinja'd!!!1

Better gearing, better aero, torque curve that makes it easy to hook up and then go. C5 suspension geometry is better, but I think the settings available to the ZR-1's adjustable setup gave it some perks over its successor.

As for the engine, everything the LT5 does is absolutely effortless. You can tell when the push-rod engines are being stressed, but the LT5? It can go on forever.

I have a C4 ZR-1. I would not trade it for a C5Z.

Kinja'd!!! Tuned-Port-Injected-Rage > 1337HPMustang

Kinja'd!!!1

It would be totally insane. Would it have been cool? Yeah. But I think GM made the right call switching to the LS1. While the L98, LT1, LT4, and LT5 were great (The L83 sucked), the LS1 is a somewhat more versitle powerplant. That, and GM probably would have been criticized for using dated mechanical bits, especially after they promised an all-new 'Vette.

While the OHC would detract from the center of gravity, the LT5 was shoved further into the firewall on the ZR1, hence allowing the car to have a little advantage in the center of gravity.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > That Bastard Kurtis - An Attempt to Standardize My Username Across Platforms
11/16/2014 at 01:37

Kinja'd!!!1

That's what it is. It contains a VHS, special introductory book on the ZR-1, a key-ring, and a ZR-1 specific owner's manual to cover things not covered by the general Corvette owner's manual. If you've got one with all the bits, it's worth about $300-$400.

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Dsscats
11/16/2014 at 01:49

Kinja'd!!!0

It's a different experience. I have both an LT4 and an LT5 car. The LT4 is a nice, strong motor that pulls hard with a smooth power delivery. It can do 6000 RPMs just fine, but you can tell it's not really happy being up that high. The car itself is nice and poised, tipping easy into the corners.

The LT5, on the other hand, is an event. The way it behaves is more like a VTEC engine; it's only making about 215 HP until you get past 3000 RPM. At that point, you will feel the secondaries open whenn all of that sudden, instantaneous torque hits you like a sledgehammer. It's less pronounced with the post-93 cars, because the computers got better and the activation point went from being decided by a step-function to being decided by a smooth curve. Also, because there's a 600 lb. engine up front, the car is more inclined to kick the tail out if you don't respect the power.

tl;dr: the LT4 is easier to drive, but the ZR-1 is waaaay more fun. Also, the ZR-1 just sounds better.

That said, twin turbos is weird. Cool, but weird. I think those are turbos...

Not a terrible deal, but you can find better. Seems a lot of good ones pass through NC. There was a steel blue metallic one that sold in the DC area for $16,000 not too long ago, a black one in NC for $12,000, and then of course my own from NC for $14,300.

Kinja'd!!!0

Yeah. I think it is a bit more expensive because it has lower mileage. That's pretty awesome that you have a decent amount around you. This is the first one I've seen in a while around Detroit.

Yours is a '90, right?

Kinja'd!!! Axial > Tuned-Port-Injected-Rage
11/16/2014 at 12:52

Kinja'd!!!1

'90 indeed, accept no substitute!

The thing about ZR-1s is that they hate not being driven. Only 18,000 miles on a 25 year old car? That's only a few short trips a year.

The other thing is that even the higher mileage examples are generally well taken care of. When the car you are looking at gets old enough, as a 1990 ZR-1 is, mileage becomes meaningless and current condition is what counts.
