I told my dad I was planing on setting up a woodworking shop in my new house. He told me before I go out and buy anything I needed to go to his place and he'd get me started. You see my old man is a carpenter by trade an he is always upgrading tools and turns out he has extras of just about everything.

I now have just about everything I need to get going. He also gave me a table saw but it's still at his place until I move next week.

Here's what I got today.

Ridgid Cordless 18V Drill/driver and 2 14.4V impact drivers complete with 3 batteries an 2 quick chargers (one of them needs a new power cord)

Kinja'd!!!

A big ass Bosch Jigsaw

Kinja'd!!!

Makita Palm Sander

Kinja'd!!!

Porter Cable Finish Nailer complete with nails

Kinja'd!!!

Bosch 14.4V Cordless Drill/Driver

Kinja'd!!!

Makita Hammer Drill

Kinja'd!!!

Staple gun, Caulking gun, Hammer, Steam iron for doing veneer

Kinja'd!!!

All I need to get now is a Compressor, Sliding compound miter saw, orbital sander, circular saw & a Kreg jig. My old man saved me about $1300 bucks today.

I had the same thing happen. My dad had a bunch of old tools he gave me, like a jigsaw, circular saw, drill, a nice plunge router, and a chop saw.

I never had an interest in it when I was younger. But now that I have a house, the bug just hit me. It runs in the blood I guess, it just took me a long time to realize that it's what I was meant to be doing on my spare time.

Tell me about it. Now I don't feel so bad spending $500 bucks on a sliding compound miter saw.

It's one of the best feelings. I got there and he was pretty throwing stuff at me.

"you'll need this, you'll need that, oh you'll definitely need one of these."

I was expecting to get a few things but nowhere near this much.He also gave me a bunch of extension cords and compressor air hoses.

My old man never buys the cheap junk so that's a plus for me. I just need to convince him of all the other new stuff he should buy so I can have the old one.

Nice! My dad is a carpenter too, and a lot of my first tools were his old ones. I've since sold most of them, and put the cash towards new/upgraded tools, but it sure was nice to get a good start.

Nice haul. Pops is a cool guy. "All I need now is a Compressor, Sliding compound miter saw, orbital sander, circular saw & a Kreg jig." You are delusional. Once you start, you cannot stop. You always want another tool. Have fun. BTW, it's Ridgid.

that's the plan. It's just hard to buy everything at once like I was needing to do. I can upgrade as I go but at least I have something to work with now.

really? I've never heard of power tools with lifetime warranty. I might have to do that.

Absolutely, and like you said, now you can spend the extra to get a sliding compound miter saw.

My old man swears by Milwaukee tools. What do you think? Right now I can get the 12" sliding miter with stand for $500.00 a fair amount cheaper than dewalt.

This one?

I'm sure quality and accuracy won't be an issue. I've never used a Milwaukee miter saw, but I love their hand-held power tools. It can say it won't be as easy to use, as it's got the old-school screw-type lock on the miter angle adjustment. That will make a bigger difference to you than you might think, when you're screwing around with a combative piece of crown molding. The reason I'd spend the extra money on the DeWalt, is the miter angle capacity. The DeWalt can go 50 degrees on one side, and 60 on the other. The Milwaukee is restrained to 48 degrees. That extra capability has proven worthwhile to me, when I had to make some weird cuts.

I could seriously talk tools for days. I think most of the big brands have things they're best at. That Bosch jig-saw you've got is tits, you just can't beat a Bosch jig saw. My old Milwaukee corded drills are some of the best things going. Stay away from Porter-Cable though, they've turned to cheap shit, since Delta bought them out. Delta has also gone to hell.

That would be the one.

All good advice. Thanks! He has a shit load of other stuff that he said I could borrow at anytime but I can't have. So I can pretty much do everything now.

Have much fun with your tools. I know I do with mine. You are Acadian? I assume you are in one of the eastern provinces of Canada? I know some of your history and thank you for givings the US the Cajuns. Sad past story they had, but a glorious present they have.

Yes I'm Acadian. I'm living in Edmonton Alberta now but I'm originally from New-Brunswick in the Moncton area. You're welcome for the cajuns. They sure know how to giver!

I did not get one yet but I'm leaning towards this Milwaukee 12"

Kinja'd!!!

Right now it's $499.99 and it comes with the stand for free (normally $230)

Kinja'd!!!

Ideally I would like to get the Dewalt 12" sliding but I can't justify the extra $200.00 for it over the Milwaukee and it doesn't come with a stand either.

My school had a Makita chop saw; it was excellent. We had a DeWalt one too, similar to that one pictured... but I didn't like how it cut. It was often rough, even with a new blade. I'd suggest not getting the DeWalt.

The Makita cut very smoothly and was easier to use in terms of mitering and such. The laser guide was a nice feature as well. Milwaukee makes really good, durable tools so you can't go wrong with that one either.

I have been to Edmonton several times. Beautiful city. Up until 1 year ago, I had 3 friends that lived there and in surrounding towns. Never been to NB. Someday, I would like to explore the Atlantic Provinces. Especially want to see the Bay of Fundy.

I've been to the Bay of Fundy many times as it's just an hour away. They found a great white shark in there last summer. It's also home of the highest tides in the world I here the Cabot trail in Nova-scotia is quite the scenic drive. I Haven't done it yet.
