Kinja'd!!!

I don't know anymore, I try to explain things to people about the FocuST, and I get talked down to like an incompetent, uneducated and stupid child who doesn't know better or as some people call it, "checking your privileges". So am I?

Before I go on, I'm just gonna come out and say it, I just don't care anymore:

I regret getting the FoST!

I don't care that it's a practical fun car for a young engineering student, and that it's one of the best modern compacts/hot hatches that comes with a stick only in the world right now; it's just not for me I don't think.

Kinja'd!!!

I'm not saying it's a bad car, very far from it honestly. It's an excellent car for the price, it's fun and zippy, it's quick and has torque for days(even if turbos aren't my favorite thing), it's got a comfortable cabin even in it's lowest trim, which I've got. The transmission is smooth-shifting and the clutch is VERY light. The car is also spacious and practical as well. There wasn't a better car to learn how to drive stick in and there's absolutely nothing I can say that's severely wrong with the car that makes me hate it(aside from the poor cupholder placement).

It's the right car for me, just not the one I wanted when I got it or right now; and that's where I get flamed to death by the people of the interwebs. People only read as far as they want to before they decide that I'm instantly a spoiled brat and undeserving of such a good car as this. And you know what, maybe they're right. Maybe I don't deserve it at all, and I should've stuck with my old Astra; and stopped "bitching" like I've been told, but I should be at least be allowed an explanation before I'm burned at the stake right?

Kinja'd!!!

First off, the instant response to my wanting something else, is that I must be some damn rich kid with parents with pockets full of money. I come from a middle class family who's parents own two small retail shops, we're not by any means "rich", but we're better off than some I suppose.

The second response, that I "should stop bitching about the free car I'm driving". Maybe in a way it is free, on account of the fact that my dad took out a loan for the car on top of the $8,000 down payment($7500 from me selling my '08 Saturn Astra that my mother had bought me the year before, the other $500 coming from my parents); so yes, the down payment was their money; but they're not paying off the loan, that is MY responsibility to pay off monthly with MY money from MY job. I don't think that paying $295 per month makes it a "free car".

Now, what car do I want instead of the FocuST?

The one in the lead picture. I want a Mustang. Yes, it was my mistake to be impatient and go for the FoST because I wanted a new car at the time and could've gotten a '15 V6(yes it's a V6, but frankly I don't give a damn); it was my mistake for not considering a used car at the time. It was my mistake for not doing enough research, not being properly educated on cars, engines, transmissions, their characteristics and feel in general, it's all completely my fault.

If I had unlimited money, what kinda Stang would I have? This one:

Kinja'd!!!

A Competition Orange(or Grabber Blue, if it ever comes back) GT Premium with the "50 Years Appearance Package" and 3.55 gears, it doesn't even have the dam Performance Pack, but that's an argument for another time, if ever.

Kinja'd!!!

Why? Because I'm scared is why. Scared that in the near future, when I finally have the time, the funds to afford a car of my choice, the Mustang will no longer have the 5.0 that I want, and in line with CAFE regulations, will have some kinda turbocharged Ecoboost V6 or something along the lines. The car world that I known and have grown up in is slowly dying and going away, and changing so fast in ways I'm not prepared for, and it scares me. I don't think there'll be anything I want down the line, every car will be the same in physical form, only being unique and different in name; every car will be some kinda hybrid, turbocharged eco-car, only differentiated in name. I'm not ready for that. :(

You know why else? Because I'm jealous of others. When driving the 911 and to an extent the 944, people look at me in awe, that a 19 year-old could be driving to good classic vehicles; the FoST, it does nothing, I blend in, and I hate that. Can't make the FoST stand out no matter where I am or what I'm doing, even if it's at a car related event. So let me get this stuff out of the way.

Rusto: I'm jealous of your 997 and the other cars in your garage(you know which ones I'm talking about)

BTU: I'm Jealous of your i8

Yamahog: I will be jealous of your Mustang(when you get one)

Silvestro: Even if it's still a Boxtser, I'm jealous that you have a brand new Porsche

Everyone else: If you have a Mustang, 911, 918, 928, some V10-V12 car of any kinda, just any kinda of supercar or sports car that has presence, I'm jealous of all of you!

There, I said it. You lot are all probably better off financially than I am now, and I hate that about myself, I can't have nice things(excluding the FoST) that I want now, and when I can(if ever) they won't have the same presence they have now, they won't be special and the things I want won't be the same and that bothers me to no end.

Kinja'd!!!

But should I be flamed for wanting more than what I've got? For wanting something that I think is better, regardless of what people might say(V6 haters, I'm talking to you)? To me, the FoST is a great car, but the new Mustang is a great car and has presence, which is what I like and want in a car. I don't see anything I've said in regards to to FoST as complaining at all, just me trying to explain myself, only to be incinerated by everyone else.

Does anyone understand where I'm coming from? I know this jumped around a lot, but there's too much on my mind.

Maybe this post is pointless and just another open door to a morally righteous and hate-driven assault from you lot; I don't know, I just needed to vent and write this.

I'm sorry.

2. There are way way way way more spoiled kids (I'm not even calling you spoiled) who don't know dick about their cars and have their parents buy whatever they think is cute.

Instead of thinking about it the way you are, think about it like this:

There are people from every walk of life and socioeconomic class that love cars. It seems like you do, and your parents got you a great car. There are kids whose parents buy them Ferraris. Don't brag about it and don't be a dick, but enjoy the shit out of it. You don't owe anyone anything.

"I don't really think the FoST is for me" is all that needs to be said, really. It just sucks that you had to have one first to know. The grass may always be greener on the other side of the fence, but to know for sure you'll really need to try the Mustang first, and that means at least sort of entering the market. That may be hard. There's nothing particularly wrong with being disappointed easily, but jealousy is another matter - sometimes a hard thing to keep a lid on., particularly when run over time.

In short, if you can suffer the jealousy pangs a while longer, the FoST isn't something to really suffer from itself in the mean time, and pushing along another year or so puts you in the "new car every couple of years" club instead of the "can't make up his mind" club - and is likely to bend fewer people out of shape - particularly family.

It's a killer, but for now, you're the guy with the FoST, and it's healthiest to try to be happy with it for now... but make plans accordingly. FWIW, I wouldn't just look over a FoST, nor would a lot of enthusiasts, and I think as much as the 'Stang has greater presence there will probably be actual people who think less of you as a result of driving it - it's too "hot-headed twit kid" stereotyped for a lot of people.

All I can say is, be patient. No one becomes financially comfortable overnight.

Think about all of the people you said you envy, do you think they got to the positions that they're currently in by luck? While I don't know them personally, I would venture to say, no. They worked hard and stayed focused on their goals and have achieved them. I can understand your jealousy of others but you shouldn't envy them, you should strive to emulate them. Nothing in life is easy but putting forth the effort required to meet your goals, makes achieving them that much more gratifying.

As the philosopher M. Jagger once said, "You can't always get what you want. But if you try, sometimes, you get what you need."

Well, here's my opinion: You aren't appreciating what you have enough. You're just seeing other things and saying "Wow, I like that." and then becoming dissatisfied with what you have. It's ok to like things, and want things, but it's another to start saying "I don't like what I have now solely because its not this other thing that's newer and what I want now."

Just enjoy what you have. And also, even if they stop making V8 Mustangs, there will always be one for sale close by.

I think I've got to say yes. As a 23 year old finishing his BSEE in a month who has been forced to drive a 99 Camry for 6 years this definitely rubs me the wrong way. I have worked two internships and saved the vast majority of my wages both summers because I was told I would be able to buy a car and both times my dad backed out (for various "reasons" that eventually were proven to be malarkey he just wanted me to drive his car until I finished school). I make excellent grades and stay out of trouble but I could never, ever hope to get help buying a new car much less $8,000. I would be so happy with a half interesting $5k car and would probably die if I could have something as nice as a spanking new Focus ST. I just can't imagine that getting something so nice for so little wouldn't make any young enthusiast the happiest guy on the block.

It's a word you've used half a dozen times at this point, and it's a word and an emotion that will get you pretty much nowhere in life, and more often than not will lead you to make poor financial or personal decisions.

I'd encourage you to learn to not care about what other people think of the material possessions you own (or are borrowing to one day own), and instead focus on the things that truly make you happy. All the riches in the world can not buy contentment...

And the 944 rocks, by the way, even if you can't drive it that regularly - kind of like the Rover I took years to get done. Want to know what I've been driving since before I got out of college? An '87 Benz. Because it's the first gen of a modern era platform, it's not even really cool old, just meh. Toward the end of college: "I think I'll get a Mustang"... failed chances to get a solid job later... nope. Finally started to make semi-serious plans to get a Mini... but the constant low tenor of available work meant that it just wasn't practical to try... and then my friend got exactly the Mini I wanted! Grrr. I flirted with the idea of a FoST around that time, but I'm still clawing my way out from tens of thousands in college debt - finally got an okay job but not a great one. So, fuck it. Time to build the car *I* want to have, in every way. For about the cost of a car payment, but on my schedule and a shorter time table, I'm building a V8 hot rod car-pickup that will be absolutely unique - with high performance, decent mileage, utility, and everything exactly how I build it.

What I'm saying is, I feel ya. I've done the jealousy thing... for years and years. Not so much lately. I've done the waiting and waiting for the right moment thing... my previous favorite Mustang got messed with in a way I didn't like much, the Mini had some of my favorite features dicked with, etc. etc. I'm now at the "don't get mad, get even" phase of general-car-getting, and you know what? It feels good.

It does make sense for you to move as soon as you can, but being miserable in the mean time... can't say I recommend it.

Are the reactions of others to your car a fundamental part of your ownership experience? If so, to me, that's silly. As an auto enthusiast, why would you care what others think? I believe automotive enthusiasm should be about how you feel about your car.

You yourself even said that it's "fun and zippy". So why don't you think it's the right car for you if you're having fun and it's practical, etc., etc.? Simply because there are other cars you want? That will always be the case. Love the car(s) you have.

I'm not gonna rail you. But I went through the comments, and your head is definitely in a posterior, inverted position. Here's why:

- You say the ST is nothing to brag about, but I have grown friends whose new car fund could only afford a Versa, Sentra, or Corolla. If the Focus isn't worth bragging about, maybe you should spend some time in one of those.

- You say that if the 5.0 isn't around when you have the means, then your dream is shattered. Dude, grow up. Get a used one if you absolutely have to have it.

I'm sorry, but you really have left yourself no legs to stand on here. It's not the wanting a new car makes you spoiled, but it is bratty to be so ungrateful for the help you've received getting the Focus.

I don't know what to . Everyone's saying to be patient, and wait for something that might not exist the way I know and want it when I can finally have it. There's no point in anything if that's the case and everything is hopeless.

Well, unfortunately that is how life goes. We don't always get what we want when we want it. At some point you have to decide whether you are going to settle for what you can afford at the time or continue working with the hope that you will be able to afford what you truly desire at some point. However, I'm sure, like most people, your interests change over time. So, just because you desire something right now, doesn't assure that you will continue to when you actually have the means to acquire it.

Also, all your work isn't for nothing because it means that you are able to afford things that you couldn't before.

Maybe not the car for you, but you had to find out the hard way, and that sucks. It sucks that you didn't have much say in the whole process.

I'm gonna tell you something... I do not think you are spoiled. You're an engineering student, which means that you are setting yourself up for a life of work. Engineering, in my experience, is not a profession that spoiled people take up. One of my best friends is an engineer, and he's a very hard worker, and is not handed anything. His dad is also an engineer, and works for what he has. Engineers are some of the hardest working, non-spoiled people that I have ever met.

Having said that, if you regret buying that car, that sucks, but you know what? It is a learning experience. Don't take this the wrong way. Life is full of hard lessons. I've made car purchases I regretted, and still do. It just sucks.

But, tell you what, you seem like a level-headed guy, and if you want your new Mustang, you'll find a way to get it. You will engineer a way to get that car. That's what engineers do, they make things WORK. May take some time, but you'll get what you want.

Also, piece of advice: Don't let people on here get to you. It's not going to do you any good. Think about more important things. There's way more important stuff than what people on the internet think about you.

Do I think you're spoiled because you have a new, nice car? No. Because, you paid most of the down payment yourself, and are making payments yourself. You're working for it. That's not spoiled at all. If your parents bought you the car out straight out, out of kindness, and you were complaining, maybe then you'd be considered spoiled. You're not though, you just learned a hard life lesson.
You spent a lot of money on something you don't even really care for, and now you just have to live with it until you can upgrade. I'm sure many of us have been in the same exact boat, probably more than once.

tl;dr You've worked for things you want. They weren't handed to you. You're not spoiled.

There's this thing called.. a used car. There will be plenty of 2015 's with reasonably low mileage available when you're done school/working full time, and they will be half the price they are right now. It's not a unicorn, it's a Mustang

Don't worry about V8's not being around for long. They'll be here for a decent while longer. Ford and GM for example, just put a ton of money and effort developing theirs. They aren't going away any time soon. There's always used cars to.

And think of it this way, your ST is going to be worth a good amount of money down the road. Mine won't be worth anything.

Then there's the 944, a car you love. Nothing beats that. I'd rather have an older dream car then any brand new one.

Just be patient and work hard. You'll get there eventually.

I may end up in a Mustang, but it's a long way from what I had when I was 19.... not to mention my XJ's transmission is about to croak and I may end up asking to borrow one of my dad's beaters for the winter. It's easy for someone in my situation to be jealous and call you a brat, but I know you're a good kid. Also:

checking your privileges

FWIW I'm not sure that's the right phrase for what's going on here, but that's a conversation for another time.

From your posting history and the few times I've met you, it seems like you're always finding new things to focus your energy on, and when you do, you (naturally) lose interest in whatever you were doing before: Charlotte, fixing the 911, getting your own Porsche, rebuilding that engine, now onto a Mustang, etc. My sister is the same way with her hobbies, obsessing over one thing, then completely dropping it a month later and onto the next one.

Not that there's anything wrong with that, but you may want to try to chill that cycle down a bit for now because it seems like it's stressing you out. Focus on your grades, get the internships, then the jobs, and everything you're getting obsessive over now will still be there when you have more expendable income and less worries. In just a year or so, you'll find 2015 Mustangs with a nice chunk of depreciation eaten by the first owner.

Source: worked my way through school and subsequent loan debt, finally buying myself a not-shitty car (it'll be my first one less than 10 years old and with less than 100k miles!) by my 25th birthday. Patience.

They will sell over 200k of them before the next model. There will be plenty left for you. If I was your parent and you traded the ST this soon I would be really disappointed. Unless you bought it all on your own. Even then I would question your financial sense. Then again I would of never got you a brand new car to start with. I don't intend to start a new vs used debate. My personal opinion is that a brand new car only makes sense if you're committed to kept it at LEAST 10 years. Life is way too short for that kind of commitment.

It might not be to you, but having something brand new to me is something special. My dad having his 911 since 1975 and being the only owner, that's special to me. To have a brand new Mustang GT or 911 spec'd to the way I want it ordered, just for me, brand new, that's special.

Spoiled? No. Gonna be very blunt here, no offense intended:

1.) A Focus ST is a great car but it's not exactly a Huayra. It is affordable speed for many. People may like it (or even love it) but there probably aren't people just absolutely green with envy that they are not you.

2.) So you learned you don't like what you've got. Join the club. Seriously. I wish I had gone any of the 4 other directions I could have in my last motor build. I wish I didn't bail out of my first Z/28 project. I wish I didn't pass on that 440 six pack Charger. I wish I hadn't wasted time building those 4-speeds. I wish I had stayed more stock instead of plunging into the modified pool head first off of the high dive. But that's where I'm at now. Such is life. Learn from your decisions. Beat yourself up only after you learn nothing.

3.) Stop giving a shit about what other people think of you and your car.

something that might not exist the way I know and want it when I can finally have it.

Exactly what drove me to finally snap:

Kinja'd!!!

On the other hand, stewing ain't gonna help. Love the one you're with type stuff applies, even if you end up ginning up some spite - but the best thing for you to do is to *make a plan*. I wouldn't say wait until some nebulous "sometime", because with means, and the trade-in on the FoST, you can actually plan a future time to replace it. It doesn't matter in the end if the plan has to change, if the plan itself is good enough to get you most or all of the way there - and when you have the plan, you won't freak out about it. Be frank with your folks, but without histrionics: "I can't thank you enough for the Focus, but I don't think it's a match long term. Can I possibly convince you to let me try a Mustang in < month> next year?"

I never had anything in place to be able to make solid plans. No equity, no good job connections - > no plan, no Mustang. Mini or FoST. That's not where you want to be, but a FoST for today is actually pretty damn nice, and I'd concur somewhat with others that you're putting too much value in what a car says. Combine with your previous posts about so-to-say comfort in your own skin, and I think you need some outlets other than cars before you get manic. This is a vital stage of growing up - finally being able to find center. Some people never do, but most people do, though in some cases it drags on for years. I wish you the best in it, and really do hope you get the Mustang: it shouldn't be a vital symbol of who you are, but there's something to be said about imagining yourself in one, so to speak.

Even if you came across as a whiny bitch, people who say "check your privilege" can go fuck themselves.

But seriously, be positive, not negative. If you like a new car, you don't have to regret your current car. For what it's worth, jealousy is a sin. It's natural to want stuff, but bad to let it make you upset or angry. If this is that big a deal to you though, you might want to seek some counseling or therapy.

To me though you just sound like a stereotypical crazy perfectionist engineer, so it just comes with the territory I guess. You engineers are an odd breed. ;)

Look I don't know! People in exotic cars tend to show off and be obnoxious with their presence or be appreciated. I'd like to be the latter, to feel appreciated with my presence, have people notice me, have some attention. To feel like I actually fit in and belong. I can't do that with the FoST, I can semi-do that with the 944.

I've bit my tongue, and bit my tongue and bit my tongue. But I can't bite my tongue no longer. Are you a spoiled brat? You asked. In my opinion you are.

Dude: You've had a great automotive life so far. You're what? 19 20 21?

Wait until you get in the real world and find out what a real problem is!! A problem like "oh shit, I don't have enough money for rent". A problem like a teenaged mother has, a problem like my friend had when he was a month away from being out on the street because he had run out of money and had no job. A problem like a girl I know had, when she had her power turned off when she was pregnant and had to go to the foodbank.

Those are actual problems. Wanting a brand new Mustang is not a real fucking problem. Having a "less than ideal" car is not a real problem. Guess what? I want a new car too, one that has rear defrost, one that has a check engine light that is actually off, but it ain't gonna happen just now.

I've wanted a G body my whole life. I don't have one, but you don't hear me lament this on a day to day basis.

I know a lot of grown ass adults who don't have a car, or drive a beat up old economy car because that's ALL they can afford.

You're getting a post secondary education, there's a lot of people who can't even afford that.

If you count what you don't have you're going to be miserable forever. There is always someone who is going to have more, the latest and greatest and so on and so forth.

If you count what you do have, a family that loves you very much, a education, two goddamn vehicles, both of which are pretty cool, well you'll be a lot happier.

Get some perspective on life and come back. I don't want to be a dick but as somebody just struggling to make ends meet, your life seems pretty remote to me.

3. Is my problem but I can't help it! I want to be noticed, I want to not blend in, I want to feel like I belong not where I am currently with the FoST. I want to feel what it's like to be the center of attention in something. I can't do that.

That's not my point. My point is that you made it seem like finding something you want on the used market is impossible, and the fact is, it's not impossible, especially when you're talking about a Mustang. If you really want a V8 Mustang, it'll be worth getting it used if you actually wanted one. And if it's true that having something new to you is "special" (as you said to cayman2007) then why are you not more satisfied with the Focus ST?
