BMW will sell you a $32,950 car with less power than a Subaru BRZ. 180 HP from a turbo charged 2.0L inline-4.

Now, imagine that paired with xDrive. It's a $2,000 optional extra with a heaping helping of weight and extra drivetrain loss.

Oh, and the only "free" colors available are white and black. The rest are a $550 extra. And you get the same standard features that are available out of your average economy car.

Yuck.

it has less HP than a BRZ, but it has more torque, is easier to make fast (this same engine makes 240hp in the 328i, and would probably need just a tune to get it up there) and bears the BMW badge.

These are going to be the E30 318i's of the day in 20 years time, provided they last that long.

Wow.

Infiniti Q40.

328hp V6.

Way more standard features.

$33,950.

In 1984, Porsche would sell you a 944 that made a grand total of 150hp on a good day for $35,000. That's roughly $80,000 today. Yet still, 30 years later I saw one and thought to myself "I NEED THAT" like so many others.

It's also the only manual RWD sedan in that price range, so there's that. The base 325i E36 cost about $32000 1994 dollars, so it's not like this is a new thing.

A smallish family car doesn't need 300hp. 180 will move it around just fine. (not that I'm defending BMWs ridiculous pricing or anything)

come on, you and I both know it's why it costs so much. you can build your own PC for less than an Alienware, but you don't have a warranty on it. same goes for cars. you can make a sick ass FRS/BRZ for the price of a 320i, but your warranty will be long gone.

It's called prestige pricing. It's when a brand name costs more than a non-brand name.

Think Oreos and "Penguins" or Coke and "K-cola Brand" Big brands=more money

Welcome to the wonderful world of European car prices.

The same car in France costs 34,800$, on top of which you have to add 20% of VAT.

It's not a new thing, but, like, so? This thing seems to have less base features than a Corolla. The standard has shot up in the mainstream. Forget about that manual transmission because you know it isn't a fair trade off.

I don't think it excuses the asking price when I can load up some economy brand's sedan with every available option and get more car for about the same amount of money than that bloated lease-mobile.

I just now went on Ford's website. Fusion Titanium, AWD, $32,435. Still cheaper, and without the typical rebates you get with a domestic vehicle. If you put it side by side with the xDrive model that's over $2,000 less.

That car carries that weight quite a bit better than the overweight 3-series, I should imagine.

Also, yeah, 30 year old car.

It's not at all about what it needs. It's about what's being offered for the money.

It's, like, one could get this or a Ford Fusion Titanium with AWD. And still save some money.

That's a bad analogy, because every part you purchase comes with a warranty. I just had to RMA one of my HDDs this week. It comes with a 5-year warranty.

Good luck finding a pre-built computer that comes with a 5-year warranty as standard.

To be honest, I would pay the extra to have a stable car at high speeds. I would feel pretty sketch cruising in a BRZ at 120mph for extended amounts of time.

Your PC analogy kind of didn't work with me, but I get what you're after. I would argue more to the point that the BMW would have better "creature comforts" than the 86. But then again, people are whores for badges. Basically, we are not who car companies make the bulk of their cars for. Just like with computers (I guess your analogy isn't so bad after all), companies make more mid-level machines with integrated graphics because the general consumer isn't going to be gaming or rendering. I think I'm rambling - sorry, it's early and I'm just now having my morning coffee. Also work is distracting me. Also I'm just an idiot.

Less power but more torque (200lb-ft), which is why the base model 3-Series can hit 60mph in as much time as the BRZ.

You also get RWD, better economy than the BRZ, a 50/50 weight distribution, 8spd automatic or 6spd manual, foglights, drive dynamics settings, auto start/stop, tilt/telescoping steering wheel, power mirrors, cruise control, rain-sensing wipers, Key memory (the key controls mirror and power seat settings with climate settings, so you never had to re-adjust after someone else drives). I don't think those features are common on economy cars.

Edit: ZOMG A BMW COST MORE THAN A SUBARU/SCION TELL ME MOAR ABOUT HOW THIS IMPACTS YOUR DAILY ROUTINE.

11/12/2014 at 11:20

Not a comparison. It's an example. I could have just as easily picked out an economy brand's sedan and feature for feature the Beemer would lose.

Kinja'd!!! Burrito de EJ25 > Party-vi
11/12/2014 at 11:23

Kinja'd!!!0

The BRZ's power figures were an example, not a comparison. Pick out an economy brand's mid-size sedan and go bonkers on the options list and you have a more luxurious car for less. That's especially true if you're looking for AWD.

And yes, most of those features, which I doubt come as standard on the 320i, are optional extras on the economy brands.

Kinja'd!!! Party-vi > Burrito de EJ25
11/12/2014 at 11:31

Kinja'd!!!0

The features listed are all standard for the 320i, as pulled from BMW's website. (fog lights are questionable). A Ford is always going to cost less than a comparable BMW because it's a Ford. The reason for this is that it's assumed the the BMW has more attention to detail and is better engineered than the Ford. Parts are supposedly of a better quality and the driving experience is also supposed to be better. When comparing any 2002 Ford product to my 2002 330Ci I would tend to agree. We also need to figure out what your definition of "luxurious" is. Leather interior and a nice stereo? Of course an optioned-up economy brand car is going to be more "luxurious" than a base-model stripper BMW. BMW does not make economy cars. Subaru and Ford do. Your argument is the same as the manual vs. automatic, or old vs. new argument, or even apples vs. oranges. No shit an economy car is going to be cheaper than a luxury car.

Also for the life of me I can't figure out why anyone would look for AWD in a new car - worse gas mileage and more stuff to break.

Meanwhile, in Germany

Notice that €31.4k = $39.1k US. As a sedan it's €29.7k = $36.9k. Also notice that the 320i is far more expensive.

it's hard to explain the differences in chassis/drive train and suspension that come with the more expensive brand. I think you just have to drive them both. As we all know here at oppo, the numbers don't make the car.

For AWD though, I don't know where you are, but up here in Michigan, AWD really does help with control when there is a lot of snow. Not stopping, but stability at speed.

Kinja'd!!! Mattbob > Burrito de EJ25
11/12/2014 at 13:32

Kinja'd!!!1

You can't really make comparisons like that until you drive both of them. The numbers almost never speak to what a car is really like. There are things like cabin noise, handling, high speed stability, materials used, drive train engineering that the numbers on paper really don't begin to touch. I drive a '93 325i and do all the work on it. It has held up over the years WAAAAY better than any tarted up econobox ever would have, and I am still confident in driving it at a fairly high speed.
