I carry tools and spares in the rear underfloor trunk of my Volvo brick but have grown tired of hearing them clang around on bumpy roads. Me thinks I need a tool roll, but I would like to hear if you opponauts have a favorite one, or any silent tool storage for that matter. Thanks in advance.

I have a canvas Arsanal one I got from Amazon that I use for my wrenches at work. Cheap, effective. The one you pictured is gorgeous and I want one.

I have a very old Brookstone model similar to the one pictures (without the leather pouches) that I really like. It's packed and overstuffed and many many many years old. I also have a couple newer nylon-ish Craftsman ones that are just okay, they assembled them with the straps too long and reversed, and not enough velcro where it needs to be and I have to twist the straps to make the velcro grab. They were in the discount bin, so maybe they have fixed it since. The newer ones do get the job done, but aren't very friendly. The screwed up newer ones have actually held up very well over the years too.

Basically, as long as it fits your stuff, that's probably all you need to worry about. If you are really having problems with the straps, grab some basic straps at REI or a camping store and have somebody sew them on (or sew them on yourself for some pride in a "modded" version...).

If you just need something to quiet the clanking, go check adhuntr for "sewing machine" and pick up a used Nelco or similar (seem to go for about $60 or so). They do all the basic stitches. Then hit a fabric store or order online. Fleece is cheap at $5 to $10 per yard and will quiet the loudest of tools. A yard is plenty to make a couple of tool rolls. I have all my track day tools set up in rolls in a steel toolbox that rides in the hatch of my Z, right behind me for the drive to and from. It stays quiet even on our under-construction highways. They seem to last. My Mom made some of them for me probably 20 years ago and they're in perfect shape with just laundering them every once in a few years. Those canvas and leather ones are awesome, though. I'm going to go search for one for a Christmas suggestion...

I picked up a small tool bag at Canadian Tire. (If you're not Canadian, think Walmart but for men). It works pretty well at keeping things quiet because it's usually jammed so full that nothing can move around. This one:

http://www.canadiantire.ca/en/pdp/masterc…

Kinja'd!!!

Okay, so it calls itself a "large tool bag", but it's much smaller than the duffel bag I have full of recovery gear (and torque wrench and breaker bar) that also rides around behind the seats. Sometimes it sucks rummaging though it, but when I've been pissing around with something on the side of the highway at -30, it's nice to be able to just toss everything back in a bag when I'm done, without worrying about making sure it all goes back in exactly the right spot or having it all loose while I'm driving around. The easier it is to put things away, the more likely it is to happen when I'm angry cause I'm wet and dirty and late, and/or my hands are cold enough I start losing motor function...

I tend to hate tool rolls, because one accidental orientation change and they can go flying out the top.

That said, if one insists upon having one, find a local skilled craftsperson to make one for you from your choice of materials. It'll be custom made to fit YOUR tools in the order you want, the size you want, and it'll last. Plus it can lead to a future business relationship where the craftsperson can make other things, like belts, tool belts & pouches, even custom door pulls for the inside of your race car, Porsche-style (and others, of course, Porsche just charges an absurd amount for them), again, from any material you want. Leather, rip-stop fabric, paracord, nylon, TyVek Home Wrap, whatever.

I just use two plain canvas bags, like this but maybe a little smaller... not home now so not sure what brand. One has a huge chain and one has a cheap socket set (wrench, extensions, common metric and sae sizes I know my vehicles use) some of the same sizes in combination wrenches, couple screw drivers, palm sized hacksaw, channel pliers, and linesman's pliers. Seriously, you could take over a country with linesman's pliers and the will to succeed.

I've used many of the hitherto useless, cordless tool bags (the ones that come with a "kit"). Typically, the smaller cordless tool kits (12V, 9.6V, etc) are sold with flattish and padded bags. They used to be the first thing to chuck after Christmas, but I have since realized they are perfect vehicle tool bags. They are certainly not going to fit a torque wrench, but they do a perfect job of quieting tool clatter and can be stuffed out of sight. I've had a zippered Bosch bag stuffed under my seat with all necessary small tools for years now. It folds right open and I don't have to worry about anything falling out. Ebay probably has a few for a nickel or two.

What is this? Jalopnik ain't your personal help me forum. A vague description of what you want a new one for isn't even a good recommendation starter. You at least need a budget and amount of tools you want to carry.

However, since you asked nicely, I used a bucket liner and and old fashioned plastic bucket. They hold ridiculous amounts of tools and don't fall over in your trunk as long as they're properly weighted down. Best of all the system is just a $5 bucket and a $15 organizer. The one I got at Lowes is more than sufficient enough for me.

I have the flat compartment. No 3rd row. Does the 3rd row really eat up all that space?

Flat compartment is perfect for that crescent set, so it gets my endorsement for your uses. Yes, the 3rd row folds under the floor and thus takes up most of the space between the spare tire and the floor. But, fucking third row!

Except now a large part of Filson manufacturing they've shipped offshore, so the make is for sure different these days.

Been happily married for 17 years, together for 23, and I still LOL'd. :) I'm fortunate, my wife loves my car hobby. I've been surprised how well the economics worked out, too. Right now, she's the one earning the money. Hoping I can change that tomorrow.

Actually, Filson manufactures all of their heavyweight wool, waxed cotton and twill, and bridle leather products at their Seattle factory. That covers all of their traditional products, including this tool roll. The only items that are now produced elsewhere are some of the recently introduced Sportswear collection. Most importantly, the "make" of all of these products is consistent with the same level of quality and material Filson has adhered to since the beginning....in other words, BOMBPROOF. One thing you will never see Filson do is cut corners.

Here is their official statement on manufacturing:

Since the introduction of Filson sportswear in October 2005, we have received many letters from dedicated customers stating their concerns over our decision to outsource the production of some of these products. We feel you deserve an explanation.

Our sourcing approach is to utilize factories that are best suited to specific products. The strength of our Seattle factory is in manufacturing heavyweight wool apparel, waxed cotton garments, and rugged twill luggage with sturdy bridle leather trim. We are proud that our factory is one of few in the world that can produce and deliver these unique products. We will continue to manufacture these products here in our Seattle factory and add new items that fit into our factory's skill set.

We understand that our customers have outfitting needs including lighter weight outerwear and sportswear. In some cases the only way to maintain Filson's commitment to quality is to manufacture these products in factories other than our own, including overseas. The overseas factories we have selected have invested in technically advanced machinery and maintain the highest levels of craftsmanship to manufacture product consistent with our standards. All Filson products manufactured in Seattle or in factories other than our own go through the same multi-point quality review here at our Seattle headquarters.

My convoluted system:

I use an old trade show computer bags from a thrift store like Goodwill for an overall container. I can usually find them for a few dollars. They are great because they have several pockets and compartments and are built for traveling.

Kinja'd!!!

Two tool rolls of your choice. If you know someone that can sew, you can make a few tools rolls from an old pair of jeans or canvas pants. The nice part about this, is you can make the tool roll specifically for the tools you select. I have one roll just for wrenches and the other for ratchets and other commonly used tools.

Kinja'd!!!

Several small zippered bags like a make-up bag, pencil case, etc. to hold fasteners, zip-ties, sockets, small tools and other items that tend to get lost at the bottom of the bag. I can usually find these at Goodwill for around a dollar. I put duck tape on the side of the bag and label the contents with a Sharpie.

Kinja'd!!!

Does all this look manly – nope, but it is cheap and functional. No one will give a shit when you can pull the needed tool or fastener out of thin air.

For well over a decade, I’ve used a nylon roll that originally came with an LCD projector. It has a bunch of different size pockets, covered by a flap and secured by a velcro strip. It carries a bunch of bike and car tools. Cost = $0.00, utility = priceless.

You can disagree all you'd like, I'm not trying to change your opinion, because it doesn't impact or inform mine.

I'm basing my opinion on being a customer for 20+ years and having experience with old product and new product. Plus doing due diligence on the company for a variety of things. You do know that they were sold a few years back right, The new guys are the ones that had the collaboration with Levi's (nothing screams quality more than co-branding with Levi's) the CEO Alan Kirk was head of sourcing for Land's End and Eddie Bauer who are decidedly mass market players, well I suppose you could categorize Eddie as specialty. I also believe he was involved Abercrombie in some capacity. Clearly, Eddie and Abercrombie are brands that chase cool and see profitability through off shore production and well Land's End was Sears until they spun it off to try and save it and the only thing that Eddie Lampert hasn't killed in Sears is Craftsman, but he's trying as they shift production of that to China. There is also retail expansion in the works for the domestic and international market and talk about a cash suck, retail stores in what I'm certain to be very $ per Sqft real estate that won't pay for themselves, but will be "flagships". Some of this info may be outdated, but if I recall correctly that's the upshot of it. Been a while since I did due diligence on Filson.

The introduction of lighter weight fabrics and more current cuts is an attempt to broaden the brand (nothing wrong with that), but when doing so flies in the face of what the brands been about for it's entire history it's an error and while SOME production remains on shore, there's plenty off shore.

It's not bombproof and stop with the absurd brand fandom. The product is decent, it isn't as good as it once was, it was never "bombproof" I've ripped many a pair of tin overalls and chaps with tin cloth. You're not breaking bridle leather, be it from Filson or anyone else. I'll give you the reins from on of our halters and you can wear it as a belt and see if you can break it.

Good grief, I get it you're in love with Filson. I hope you two can find a nice place for a ceremony and find a place out in the country to live happily ever after.
