An old friend of mine is a Toyota Master Technician and when we first met about ten years ago, he was making the transition to a run of the mill Toyota dealership after spending a few years in the service center of a very nice Lexus dealership. Something didn't seem right about that because in my eyes, working on an IS300 would be much more fun than putting new CV joints in a Corolla. Of course, I asked him why he was making the switch and he said something along the lines of this:

"Luxury car owners are insane when it comes to warranty work. The last case of a squeaky leather seat put the nail in the coffin and I couldn't take it anymore, so I started looking for a job with Toyota instead."

Notice, he said the last case of a squeaky seat, as in there were prior incidents of the same thing happening. He explained that people would buy a new Lexus, take it home, and whenever they would get in or out of the car, the seat would make a creaking noise when the leather on the bolster rubbed the leather on the seat bottom. The first fix involved them rubbing on some leather conditioner to soften it up and make the seat break in a little more quickly, but after a few days, the same car would return with a work order about the seat squeaking again. This happened about ten times over a span of a few months and he said their eventual "solution" to the non-existent problem was this:

"We would stretch a car cover over the driver's seat, tie it tight in the back, and make the oil change guy bounce up and down on it between customers for a few hours to break in the leather."

Apparently, he has all sorts of fun stories, like the sunroof making too much noise when it was open, or constant wind noise from a back window when the problem was the window not being rolled up all the way.

Though the cases my friend had to deal with were pretty over the top as far as car-related annoyances are concerned, I have had my fair share of "quirk" when it comes to the fourteen vehicles I have owned.

-Both my 1979 Jeep CJ7 and 1995 Wrangler had soft tops that would make you deaf when driving at highway speed. It was actually more quiet if you left the top down and removed both of the doors.

-My 1994 Camaro Z28 and 1995 Firebird Formula both had the glorious T-56 six speed transmission, but they both also had the "skip shift" which would force you to shift from first gear to fourth if you weren't under a load. That de-tuned engine didn't have the bottom end to pull a 1-4 shift... (I know you can buy an eliminator.)

-The 1979 MGB in the title picture caught on fire. Often. For different reasons.

However, the reason I thought to write this in the first place is because my Comet has developed a ticking noise when you are driving above 40mph. I know it's the speedometer cable and I have tried to reroute, lubricate, and otherwise rectify the issue to no avail (yet). The best part is that because of where I live, the car spends quite a bit of time in traffic, which means that when I do finally get up to speed (which should be a happy moment), it sounds like the mechanical stopwatch from hell has manifested itself in my dashboard.

Kinja'd!!!

Is there a particular feature or yet to be rectified issue on your car that is driving you nuts? Or, is there something about some else's car you ride in that makes you crazy?

2004 Infinity G35, great engine, but the doors would not stay open while entering or exiting. Even on small declines, the doors would seem to close uphill. Got really old.

The Oil Pressure gauge works occasionally and requires frequent percussive maintenance to function. Nothing like cruising down the road, and showing 0 PSI, having a heart attack smacking the dash and see the return to over 60 PSI

Also depending on the speed of travel, the pillar-less windows in the Monte will either be inside, or outside of the little retainer, which means i have to slow to sub 60 MPH to get my driver side window to close completely. Also the fact that the windows don't totally seal.

My LeSabre has reached the age where surface oxidation has creeper into plugs and sockets on the car, so I have spent a few months going around and reseating every. Damn. Plug. In the car. The lastest case is a "dashboard communications error" that causes my service vehicle (not engine) soon light to come on at random points. I'm guessing an intermittent connection at the gauge cluster, which means pulling off the dash again.

A knocking noise in our MINI. Not a mechanical noise, there's little rhythm to it. It's definitely not the suspension, that's been replaced and the sound was there before we changed it. I'm thinking something inside the tailgate's gotten loose. Either that or there's an errant nut or bolt lying around inside some panel.

The 245 (and all 240s eventually, I think) has a water leak (wiper motor, IIRC) that sprays the fusebox down when it rains. This causes the power windows to stop working at best, and a non start at worst. Don't bother buying replacement fuses at the chain auto parts store either, because the fuse housings are made of plastic and WILL melt. You have to special order ceramic fuses or pull them out of a junk car.

Nah, it's really cute and quirky when it occasionally refuses to start in Park after filling up and will only start in Neutral! Or when random cluster backlights go off and then come back, or when the washer bottle spontaneously comes back to life after having never worked only to mysteriously vanish again, or when everything not covered in oil or power steering fluid has completely rusted together, or when it suddenly develops a new clunk or funky burning smell....

In the 94 and 95 F-bodies, if you didn't mind the skip shift light coming on, you could just disconnect the skip shift actuator...no eliminator necessary.

I'd say the thing about my F150 that drives me kinda nuts is that the odometer comes and goes. It's digital, so some days it works, then it'll be off for weeks. It's still tracking mileage while off, so it's not a big deal, but annoying.

That skip shift is enough to drive you bonkers. I makes the car much more difficult to drive(and more dangerous in my opinion). I had a T-56 in my Challenger SRT8 and the ~$40 eliminator was the best thing I ever bought for that car.

A current quirk with my Ford Fusion is that the seat heater button is touch sensitive which means when it's cold enough that you want to use it you need to take off your gloves to turn it on.

'78 280Z: swapped to flattop pistons for 10:1 compression, reground cam, and swapped to a higher amperage alternator, all of which makes it not shut off abruptly when you turn the key to Off, resulting in run-on that doesn't really befit the car.

'89 Toyota with SDS EFI and added turbo. The position of the coolant/head temperature sensor, combined with the throttle body warmer deletion makes it difficult for the ECU to get the right temperature and startup enrichment calculated, and very difficult to tune it. Very hot or very cold starts have me using the enrichment knob as a manual enrichment until I can tune it precisely enough.

'04 VW Jetta. Runs like a top. If there is any significant frost, ice, or snow, the weatherstrip design will easily let the doors freeze shut hard. So, clearing the car in the morning sometimes means dumping windshield washer fluid on the door seams to melt them enough to get in the car to warm it up. A weird flaw for a car that has been otherwise perfect for 10 years.

Oh boy.

1994 GMC Safari

- Wipers don't always turn off in the right position, most of the time in the middle of the windshield. I have to fuck with the button 10+ times for them to stop right.

- Washer fluid only occasionally works.

- Headlight turn on only after you pound on the switch a few times.

- Passenger side window only rolls up with driver's side control. And only if you push the switch towards the dash as you're pushing down on the button.

- Oil pressure gauge freely moves about as I drive.

- Temp gauge doesn't work.

- Tape deck squeaks as it plays.

There's probably a couple I'm forgetting, but those are the main points.

Oh, where do I start?

'56 MGA Roadster: won't hold an idle until warmed up, parking brake sticks on when applied and can only be released by bashing on the brake drums, driver's side door doesn't always latch properly and will sometimes fly open on cornering (somewhat problematic in a car with no seat belts), and fuel gauge reads off-scale full at all times, while the temperature gauge reads 130 degrees when cold.

'85 VW Scirocco: will only start easily when partially warmed up, and is an absolute pig to start hot or cold. Shift action is akin to stirring a pot of yoghurt, and the clutch bite point is all over the place. Interior smells funky.

'96 Volvo 850R: rear hatch won't hold itself up in cold weather, service reminder light is on and can only be reset by an expensive dealer tool, most of the dash illumination doesn't work, the driver's side seat heater is burned out, and folding the back seat causes one of the belts to retract all the way and jam, requiring disassembly of the seat to fix. It leaks, burns, and probably does a bunch of other things with oil, and has an annoying and intermittent vibration at idle that I'm terrified might be due to bad compression in one cylinder.

But I love 'em all dearly, and promise myself that one day, I'll fix all of those things. But for now, I live with them, swearing under my breath gently every time they crop up.

Ooh! An XJ quirk sub-thread!!! Awesome, I want in!!

1: I won't even start to explain the death wobble: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Speed_wob… - Luckily that only happens like once or twice a year to me.

2: Every few months, after the Jeep has been fully warmed up but shut off for about 10-15 minutes, it refuses to restart until it cools down for another 10 minutes. Again, this happens once in a great while. I just assume it wants a nap and go for a smoke/walk for 10 minutes. Yes, I've replaced stuff.

3: Front door speakers randomly cut out, but come back if you kick the door. To be fair, this is an easy fix, I've just been lazy.

4: The one that really gets me..... the auto power door locks. I have power locks that lock everytime the ignition is turned on, and unlock everytime it's turned off. Or at least, that's how it's supposed to work. What really happens is most of the time the front doors unlock, but sometimes they get stuck in-between lock and unlock and then you have to re-lock them manually and then un-lock them manually. In rare cases, you have to put the window down (which means turning on the ignition again and going through the *@($^@$ lock/unlock cycle), put the key in the outside of the door, and do it that way. Now... the rear locks. These almost never fully unlock and always default to the aforementioned half lock/half unlock position. Except in this case, only one side will ever decided to fully unlock. And it varies. Every. Single. Time. I. Shut. The. Engine. Off. Might be the left side 3x in a row. Or it might be an on-going 50/50 split back and forth between left and right. My occasional rear seat passengers love the "which door am I getting in/out of this time?!?!" game. Really, they do.

Quirks in our fleet:

Montego: This is a long, long list. Overheating ever since I took it to Woodward Dream Cruise, must keep back 2 windows up (it's a pilarless hard top and is AWESOME with all 4 windows down) or headliner will become more and more damaged. Oh, and the driverside window won't stay up.

Milan: When it's raining during the day and I have my headlights on I can't see a damn thing on the stock stereo system, the lights get waaaay to dim (and yes it's turned all the way up)

Commander: Drives me freaking insane that the center console shifter does not have light up gear markers. It shows in the dash so it's just annoying, you can get the information - it's just in the wrong place.

-Half the lights in the gauge cluster are burnt out. I.E. fuel gauge, top half of speedo, etc. Makes it hard to see things at night. Not fixed because laziness

-Occasional belt squeak from unknown cause. Comes and goes. Comes more with cold.

-Second gear (Auto) has a slip/delay. Third tranny (original replaced, then replacement rebuilt) for the truck since my dad bought it. Not fixed now because expensive.

-Rough ride that would make a Sherman tank feel like a Mercedes.

-Rattles, because plastic. Lots of it.

-Impossible to find anything for the bed accessory-wise, because stepside.

-Leaks, leaks everywhere.

-Randomly blinking airbag light. Disappears for months and then will return for about a week. Has done that for years.

-Passenger side rear door barely opens unless really pulled. Possibly because of spraying bottom half of truck with bedliner

The miata my brother had in high school made 89,563 different squeaks that I couldn't eliminate every time it was moving, it also had a broken radio so you couldn't drown it out either.

The Vic has a cassette player that will try to seek between songs occasionally even during a song. I use a tape adapter for my phone and this seek makes it impossible to run a phone call through my speakers. It also has the worst seats ever fitted to a vehicle in the history of time.

My expedition I had blew out a spark plug one day while driving and had a perfectly functioning 4x4 system except it wouldn't go into 4 low

I also knew a guy in high school who had a 4x4 dodge dakota that would sometimes randomly pick 2wd or four and would sometimes only power the front wheels.

The two Saabs I have had in my teenage years:

1997 900S:

Unless the car is running (in which the key is turned to the on position) the door chime will always sound when the drivers door is open, every single time... Great for annoying the crap out of your hearing impaired mother.

The hatch latch that you have to be waiting to grab as soon as you press the button (or just use the key) or it relocks.

Crappy foam cover over the spare for the floor so after 16 years the trunk floor is no longer flat.

The reverse ignition lock that didn't let you remove the key unless the car was in reverse (stopped working at the grocery store so I had to leave the car unlocked with the keys in it while I went shopping), my dad quickly proceeded to rip that stupid rod out of the car.

1990s (and before?) Saabs had a delay on the wipers, but you can't adjust it, so it has to be raining enough for the delay to be right or NO WIPERS FOR YOU

As much convenience as I find in the console mounted window and lock switches, the lack of a real cup holder meant that I had to sit a 44oz iced tea for my mother in the center console (it was missing that optional cup holder/change holder thing) and because it was a manual, shift gears without knocking into it and steer while still holding the cup. I then stopped a little harder than I should have and missed the cup as it proceeded to dump at least half of the tea all over the switches which meant that until I got home, the doors would lock/unlock at will and set the alarm off when I did lock it with the remote.

Now onto my 1998 9000CSE

This one does have cup holders in the center console (and the backseat console), but only one (further towards the back of the car and behind my reach while driving) can fit anything over a can/medium sized fast food cup.

In both cars, almost to the new millenium, had POWER FREAKING ANTENNAS, which never go all the way up or down.

I've changed the batteries in the keyless entry but the range is kinda based on how the car is feeling that day, sometimes I have to hold it to the fender, sometimes it'll unlock halfway across the school parking lot.

There are so many seals and weatherstrippings on the doors that any amount of rain/sleet that turns into ice freezes the doors shut, and the door handles aren't flush so the locks freeze too.

The low beams don't let you see but 25 feet in front of you (might just need re-aimed, but it seems to be a common issue in the 9000 community) so my fog lights are on most of the time as well

This is a maintenance thing, but the BPC valve is bad so whenever I accelerate beyond 1/4 throttle, it dumps the boost and the car humps the air, and if I want to floor it? Nice try, the valve signals to the ECU to cutoff the fuel when that transmission kicks down, so the humping gets worse and it feels like you are slamming it into park repeatedly.

No rust yet (fingers crossed) but both of the hatches held water like a freaking bucket, on the 900, those sexy little rubber flaps, that GM puts on ALL (even my mom's Yukon Denali) their vehicles with a hatch, trapped water inside and caused the bottom of the hatch to rust out. On my 9000, this isn't an issue, the issue IS that all that collected water (from a car wash, rain, etc) stays in there, and if I open the hatch and there is even a slight breeze (or if the water just feels like it) it proceeds to drip a significant quantity of water on the Harman Kardon speakers (which aren't cheap to replace, esp. in a 15/16 year old car), luckily I've caught it before any damage has been caused but HOLY HEART ATTACK is it scary.

The door open plunger switch thingys on the the rear doors will tell the little 80s-era car diagram on the dash that the door is open, but refuse to turn the dome light on unless the car is on (the drivers and maybe passenger door do).

I think that my last grievance is with the plastic fantastic interior, with real burl wood trim! (or just very, VERY convincing plasti-wood) It sqeaks. Every. Single. Time. I'm. On. Slightly. Choppy. Pavement. Especially the gigantor C-pillar trim pieces.

Here's the two cars in question, special shoutout to the 900, she was my first, and we just sold her today.

Forgot another on my 9000, when I fill up, it will either sit there and blink the "Range 0" thing at me and tell me that my full tank is empty, or it will sit at wherever it was at pre-fillup and slowly move as I drive for a couple miles, it goes away when I start the car next and shows a full tank and range on the computer.

Fan blower doesn’t work on high (mystery short) and rattles around because I forgot to put locktight on the central nut, but fixing that requires removing the passenger fender, so I’m not gonna do that until I feel really ambitious

Windshield used to leak directly onto my left knee whenever I was driving in a heavy rain. If you moved out of the way, the rain would land on the seat and run straight to my ass. I resealed my windshield with the new sealant instead of the flowable butyl stuff so this wouldn’t annoy me any more.

The disc is still working for now, yet it engages at the last possible moment when the long pedal is almost completely lifted up again. This means shifting isn’t a satisfying swift action but a delicate, sensetive affair. It took me weeks to get somewhat used to it, and especially while parking on uneven ground it’s still very annoying.

I really want to change the disc, but I need the money for a holiday trip and other car related things first.

I had a 2005 Baja that had an issue with the windsheid trim. We called it the stall warning horn because at highway speeds, if there was even the slightest crosswind, the wind would lift up the edge of the trim almost all the way down the windshield and cause it to buzz at high frequency. If you’ve ever flown a small general aviation plane it was exactly same sound as the screech of a stall warning horn in a 172. Apparently Subaru knew about this and had a service bulletin fix that involved actually gluing the weatherstrip down. What a novel concept. Even after the dealer supposedly applied the fix, on a warm enough day the strip would still get hot enough to get soft and make the noise. As the car aged, and the strip got older and stiffer, the sound gradualy went away.

Haha I can definitely sympathize with the "makes more noise with the top up". I feel the same way about my Miata. When the top is down and the windows are up, I could drive all day with the music at a moderate volume and be comfortable. But having the top up just creates crazy wind gusts and gets quite annoying. Plus I then either have to run the AC which kills the power or open the windows which makes a ton more noise. So top down all the time is the best solution!
